CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1Background of the Study

Learning English is important, because English is an international language. It means English can be used for communication for most people who are able to speak it. According to Multazim (2005), language can also be used to explore person’s opinion, to give another person direction. to his or her destination, to give explanation and ask for suggestion. We sometimes use language to share our problems, feelings, and stories because language is a medium of communication.

In Indonesia, English is given to the students since they are in elementary schools until university levels. The purpose of learning and teaching English is to increase the students understanding about knowledge, science, and technology for national development, and also for international communication.

English has four language skills, listening, reading, speaking and writing. In English, vocabulary is one of the language components which can be mastered by practicing to use them while doing daily activity. According to Ainul (2011), students of junior high school level have to memorize about 1000 vocabularies to make them easier in understanding when they read English text and English conversation. Of course the students have to pass this target and the teacher will give the appropriate techniques and good examples to help students understand more easily. Teaching

vocabulary must use special ways or techniques in order to increase the student’s

mastery of English (Retno 2006).

According to Yuliana (2003), teaching English for young learners must be carefully done because the children have their own way of learning. Children at young age like to play and have fun. The learning and teaching process should be suited with the nature the children themselves.

In teaching vocabulary, the technique of teaching can help students learn and understand vocabulary in teaching learning process. If the technique in teaching vocabulary fluent well both for the teacher and the students, on teaching learning process will be effective. It means that vocabulary is basic for learning English especially for students of junior high school that are learning vocabulary.

A previous research, conducted by Purwoharto (2002) about the vocabulary teaching technique of the fourth class students at MIN 1 Malang showed that the teacher used two techniques in teaching vocabulary. The techniques were guessing pictures and singing songs. Between those techniques, the students preferred singing songs. They were very energetic because they were free to express themselves.

According to Arsy (2009), every student showed different responses in every meeting. Even though most of them still found difficulty to grasp the lesson, they

were still interested in the teacher’s techniques. When the teacher illustrated the situation and gave material for example, which is familiar to them, they could understand more easily the lesson given by the teacher. So, how the teacher performs and handles the teaching learning process will show how the students respond vocabulary subjects.

Introducing English should be applied earlier. Every elementary school has attempted to provide English lesson to the students. By applying the vocabulary teaching technique, the students will get a pleasure in learning English especially in learning vocabulary. The writer thinks that it is important to present a study on vocabulary teaching technique used by the teacher at SMP N 1 Bangil.

Special (=”Unggulan”) class at the first grade in SMP N 1 Bangil is not similar with another regular class. Because only one class in every grade, another class are regular class. In Special (=”Unggulan”) class the non-English teachers or content subject teachers explain 50 percent of their materials in English and 50

percent in Bahasa Indonesia. In Special (=”Unggulan”) class the English teacher have a schedule to the students have a once program conversation in a week to support their fluency in speaking. That is why the English teachers of Special (=Unggulan”) class must have techniques in teaching learning English especially in vocabulary understanding that is meant for making them easier to learn English. This research is necessary to find out the information about the teaching technique in mastering English vocabulary.
