CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This chapter reviews the background of the study, the statement of problems,
the purpose of the study, the significance of the study, the scope and limitation and

the definition of key terms.
1.1 Background of the Study
In Indonesia today, English is taught to the students from the elementary school
until university or college. Every one tries to learn and practices more in English.
Therefore new phenomenon coming up with many schools which provide some
English classes to increase their school’s grade.
In schools there is a process of learning by student and teaching by the teacher.
Learning is acquiring or getting knowledge of a subject or a skill by studying,
experience, and instruction (Arsyad, 2009:1). Learning English or second language is
a complex thing, It is not only about learning or studying program, new things, or
new language, but the learners must learn about the feelings, culture and practice their
tongue that usually speak first language to be accustom to speaking both first and
second language.
Teaching is showing or helping someone to learn how to do something, giving
instruction, guiding in the study something of something, providing with knowledge,
causing to know or understand. Teaching English or second language is different

from teaching first language or mother tongue. The learners have to take attention in

some variables such as what the students need, based on the syllabus, find the
appropriate method and the availability of time and resources. Resources here can be
materials such as books or journals or media.
Teachers must be creative and innovative to attract student’s attention to the
lesson or to make the situation of the class become active and interesting, especially
in English subject. One of the ways to make the English subject become interesting is
providing kinds of media. Media is aid or things that the function is to deliver some
messages from the messenger to the receiver (Bovee in Hanaky: 1997), that is the
way to make the process of teaching and learning become different.
According to Arsyad (2009:3) the word Media taken from Romans’ language
“mediums” that have meaning middle or mediator. It can be school, environment,
teachers or many kinds of aids such as television, radio, CD, DVD and etc. From the
meaning mediator above it can be concluded that media has important function to
arrange the interaction or the relation between a student as a receiver and a teacher as
a messenger or source who is the main thing on the process of teaching and learning.
According to Gagne in Hanaky (2009) media is the component or the sources that
can be a stimulus for the learner to learn more. A study conducted by Retno (2007)
found that media can be important stimulus in teaching learning process because
using the right media makes the students more attractive and focus on attention the
lesson. Commonly, it is something new for them, and finally it can reduce the boring

situation during the lesson. In addition a study was also conducted by Yulianda
(2004) about the use of media in SMPK Sang Timur Malang found that 93. 93%
students on SMPK Sang Timur Malang said interested in the use media. They can be
active in the class because most of them felt not bored and got easier to understand
the material and explanation from the teacher. That is why media important or needed
in the learning and teaching process because both teacher and students can take many
advantages. With the development of technology and information today the teacher
can use the media as creative as they can, to help of maximizing learning and
teaching process. Teaching media is education facilities in learning and teaching
process to increase the efficiency of that, to get the purposes of the teaching and
learning activity. The teacher’s jobs are finding the appropriate media and method for
their students.
The new phenomenon in Indonesia today is there are many international schools
build up. Those provide some English classes or the people called RSBI or SBI. RSBI
or SBI are schools that use English as a first language in their curriculum. The
teachers use English language in the entire subject. Both teachers and students use
English in their daily interaction in school.
It is known that every school tries to increase their grade by becoming
international school standard. It also happens in Batu, one of the schools is SMP N 1
Batu, the volunteer of International school standard. It provides some international
classes for second grade. Students and teachers here use both English and Indonesian
in daily interaction and in the process of teaching and learning process in all kinds of

subject. As a result English subject becomes very important, the RSBI students have
to learn English lesson quickly than other classes because they need in daily
interaction and apply faster.
RSBI class usually provides any kinds of media rather than non RSBI class.
Usually, the media provided is supported with high technology, so the teachers do not
need to make the media by them self. Therefore, the writer wants to find out what
kinds of media that have been used, how to use the media and the advantages taken
from the media. The teacher of English lesson on the RSBI class must be creative to
get the appropriate media to make the students understand faster than the student in
non RSBI classes. Hopefully, it will be useful for teacher in teaching English lesson
in special class like in RSBI class on Junior High School.
1.2 Statement of the Problems
Based on the background above, the problems of this study are:
1. What kinds of media are used for English subject on RSBI class at SMP N 1
Batu?
2. How does the teacher apply the media for English subject on RSBI class at
SMP N 1 Batu?
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using the media for teaching
English subject on RSBI class at SMP N 1 Batu?

1.3 Purposes of the Study
The purposes are follows:
1. To find what media are used for English subject on RSBI class on RSBI class
at SMP N 1 Batu.
2. To know how the teacher applies the media for English subject on RSBI class
at SMP N 1 Batu.
3. To describe what the advantages and disadvantages of using the media for
teaching English subject on RSBI at SMP N 1 Batu.
1.4 Significance of the Study
Specifically, this research is expected to give some contribution or inspiration
to teaching English Lesson with any kinds of media which provided on RSBI
class for Junior High School. The teacher will be motivated to use the media in
teaching the lesson. Generally this study has several advantages for some people
who are related. First, the Junior High School English teacher both RSBI or non
RSBI class can develop the process of teaching and learning by choosing the
appropriate media from many kind of media, they will know any kinds in how to
use the media and the advantages of using media, it also increases the quality of
teaching and learning process, because the teacher will be different and more
creative. Second for the students, it can be useful to learn and easier to apply
English on daily interaction by using the media.

1.5 Scope and Limitation
This study will concentrate on the media used in English subject at RSBI class
on SMP N 1 Batu. Furthermore it is limited on what the media used, how to apply
those media and the advantages and disadvantages of using media by sevent grade
English teacher RSBI class.
1.6 Definition of the Key Terms
1. Media

: Media are the means (usually audio visual, visual, or
electronic) for transmitting or delivering messages
(Locatis and Atkinson, 1990: 3).
In this research media means the instruments used to
convey information clearly to the students and
to support teaching and learning activities.

2. RSBI class

: A class based on international standard which is use
English language on daily interaction in school and
used by the teacher for deliver all the subject or lesson
on the teaching and learning process.
