68 10 Detailed TimeCost Analysis Hardware and software cost are estimates based on summer 2006 academic prices. Licensing situations and discounts may change and should be reassessed on the preparation of funding applications. Note that this cost assessment does not include any additional charges that could be incurred by the utilization of external data repositories such as ADS see section 7.1, or any funds to be used by external partners. 10.1 Hardware Software Requirements 10.1.1 Software 10.1.1.1 Development It is suggested that SEAD development be primarily undertaken in the integrated developer environment of Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Office and MS Office Pro. Umeå university has good support for this environment, which has a proven track record and exceptional online support through the Microsoft Developer Network and user community. MS SQL Server Developer Edition will be used to construct the database backend and stored procedures queries. Visual Studio provides a system for developing database linked web applications, and affords enhanced developer functionality with the MS Office Pro Suite. The included Access Developer Extensions facilitate the seamless deployment of the local frontend application to client machines, the Access Runtime Licence allows the software to run on machines that do not have, or do not have the correct version of, MS Access installed. Additional third party tools, such as Automated Form Resizing utilities and other existing software for improving the efficiency of development will be acquired as necessary. Table 10.1 and Table 10.2 summarise the proposed developer software solution and associated cost. Note that more than one license of some software packages will be required as at least two developers will be active. 10.1.1.2 Operation

MS Office support will ensure that the SEAD client will run on the majority of PC’s. The creation of runtime versions will ensure that no additional software is required beyond the MS Office Standard package. ArcMAP will be required to run the onsite GIS interface and licenses should be obtained for every machine where its need is anticipated. See Table 10.2 for pricing details.

10.1.2 Hardware

10.1.2.1 Development

Two developer specification MS Windows compatible PC’s, along with access to an onsite server and web hosting as detailed below, will be required for the proposed development team. Additional PC’s will be required should the team size be increased.

10.1.2.2 Operation

As described in section 5, SEAD will be developed both i as an onsite client-server system and ii for remote access via the internet. The hardware solutions for both of these components are given below: i Low end server capabilities will suffice for running SQL Server at the current scope minimum 1GHz CPU1Gb RAM recommended. Some redundancy should be obtained with the purchase of a more powerful server. ii To avoid the risk of data loss and hacker induced damage, and to reduce maintenance costs, external web hosting will be rented to store a replicated MS SQL Server database and web interface. This space will also be used as an offsite backup of the onsite database, and optimize the use of the rented space. The currently acquired domain name www.sead.com will be used as the online database portal. iii A high capacity backup solution should be acquired for onsite use. The use of removable media will provide a fire and burglar proof system, with the storage of the media in existing safes at the lab in addition to an offsite location.
