CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. The Background of The Study
Language as an important part in our daily activity by language people can
communicate with other people without misunderstanding and misperception.
Language is used by everybody to communicate and express their thoughts and
fellings to other people by sound, gestures and signals.

Linguistics which is regarded as the study of language explains all about
aspect of language in its used. Austin (1962) There are many different things that
speakers can do with words and some utterances that the speakers produce are not
statements or question about some piece of information , but actions. From austin
explanation, it shows that word are not only something the speakers say
something, the speaker do not just say it exactly, but there is an implicit meaning
behind it. Therefore, the words or utterances that we produce also can lead to
misunderstanding.
We always perform speech act in our daily life. Sometimes we don’t
realize that the utterances we produce consist of speech act. We often use
utterances with indirect meaning . Speech act occurs on the process of meaning in
how the communication occurs and how the listener receives the aim. For
example, it is hot here the meaning is sometimes implicit to request to do an
action that is to switch on the fan or maybe open the window.
Sometimes we cannot catch what other say in their utterances that may
lead people to misundestanding or misinterpretation. We can find speech act in

radio, advertisment, dialogue in television, newspaper and movie. Movie is one of
the medium where we can find a complete from of speech act. Movie uses spoken
languge which shows the power of communication in which the movies need
dialogue between two or more people.
Communication is effective if the purpose of the communication can be
gained well, both speaker and hearer have the same perception of the thing they
are talking about. Yule (1996:47) state that action performed via utterance are
generally called speech act.Speech act are a staple of everyday communicative
life. In general, speech acts make action performed via utterance. Performing an
action via utterances are commonly given more specific labels, such as apology,
complaint, compliment, invitation, and promise or request. The action performed
by producing an utterance when people speak will consist of three related act.
They are locutionary act (utterance), illocutionary act (process of meaning) and
perlocutionary acts (utterance effect on the hearer).
In this case, there are 5 (five) types of general Function performed by
speech act (Yule,1996:53):
1. Declaration that changes the world via utterances.
2. Representative that state what speaker believes to be case or not.
3. Expressive that state what the speaker feels.
4. Directive, that speaker to get someone else to do something.
5. Commisive, that speakers use to commit themselves to some future action.
They express what speaker intends.

Pragmatics approach as the way of analysis is used to consider how the
speakers use the language in the social interaction with others. The usage of
speech act is also used in movie because a movie is actually representation of the
real conversation in natural society. The writer has chosen Hotel Transylvania
movie.
Hotel Transylvania is a 2012 American 3D computer-animated fantasy
comedy film by Sony Pictures Animation. The film was released on September
28,2012 by Columbia picutures. The writer is interested in analyzing the speech
acts because it is important to get meaning of speech acts in the utterances found
in the Hotel Transylvania movie and to get a good understanding on the whole
story. In this case the writer used movie script to find out some speech act.

B. The Problem of The Study
The problems of the study are formulated as the following:
1. What type of speech acts are found in Hotel Transylvania Movie?
2. Which type of speech acts is the most dominant in Hotel Transylvania
movie?
3. Why does the dominant speech acts occurs on Count Dracula’s dialogue in
Hotel Transylvania Movie?

C. The Objective of The Study
The objective of the study are:

1. To find out the

types of speech acts of the main character in Hotel

Transylvania Movie.
2. To find out the most dominant type of speech acts used in Hotel
Transylvania Movie.
3. To find out the reason why the most dominant of speech acts occurs on
Count Dracula’s dialogue in Hotel Transylvania Movie.

D. The Scope of The Study
The study is limited to analyze utterances of the main character in Hotel
Transylvania movie named Count Dracula using the theory of speech acts by
Yule(1996:53),

declarative,

representative,

expressive,

directives,

and

commisives.

E. The Significance of The Study
The findings are expected to be useful for the readaer it can give
information about speech acts through Movie. And this research can be used as
references for the further research about speech acts.

CHAPTER V
CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

A. Conclusions
After the data had been analyzed, some conclusion are drawn as the
following:
1. There are five types of speech acts used in Hotel Transylvania Movie. They
are representative, directive, expressive, commisive, and declarative. The
total number of speech act is 299 utterances. The total percentage of
representative is 45,15% (135 items), directive 38,13% (114 items),
expressive 9,70% (29 items), commisive 7,02% (21 items), and declarative
0,00% (0 item) .
2. Seeing the result of analysis, it was found that representative is the dominant
type of speech act used by Count Dracula in Hotel Transylvania Movie.
3. The dominant type of speech act is representative. It implies that
representative has a great role in the movie with total number of 135, and
total percentage of 45,15%. Count dracula mainly uses the statement of
describing, asserting, arguing and informing about something. In all of his
dialogue with other characters, he uses many terms of representative such as
statement, explanation and informing. It means that Count Dracula mainly
used representative in communicating each other in the movie such as
arguing, asserting, complaining, describing, informing, reporting etc.

B. Suggestions
In relation to the conclusions above, suggestions are drawn as follows:
1. For the students, it is better for them to enrich their knowledge in
communication by using speech act and it is suggested for them to analyze
the theory of speech act widely in order to make further research about
speech act.
2. The readers, who are interested to do the study about speech act especially
in movie, are suggested to analyze the problem more detailin order to
develop the analysis of speech act widely.
3. It is suggested for other researchers to make a detail analysis of speech act
in other movie or another field such as dialogue in televison, radio,
advertisment, and newspaper.
