Invert the Subject and Verb with Wh- Words

There is always some confusion about when to invert the subject and the verb in question

words such as What, Where, When, Why and How.

These words have two functions in a sentence. 1. They can introduce a question.

(3)

Question Words introducing a Question

Examples:

1. Where can I find Amy?

2. When did you go to Thailand?

3. What are you going to do tonight? 4. How much would you like to earn? 5. What is the homework?

(4)

Question Words joining Two Clauses

Examples:

1. I don't really know what the homework is about. 2. It is a mystery how long he will stay in Puerto Rico.

3. Where she lives, it is a very beautiful place. 4. Do you know where Altaria shopping mall is?

(5)

•Important Ideas about WH- words joining two clauses

When a Question Word like What, When and Where

joins two clauses, notice that both the

subject and verb that follow them are not inverted.

Examples:

What he is going to do, I do not like.I would like to know

Where the party is going to be.Conclusion

(6)

•The subject and verb will be inverted

when the Wh- word introduces a question. However, the subject and verb cannot be inverted when they join two clauses.

The lawyer asked the client why ___ that. a) had he done

b) done he

c) he had done d) had done

INVERTING THE SUBJECT AND VERB WITH PLACE EXPRESSIONS

In English, the subject and the verb

sometimes can be inverted. This could be

happened with single words expressing

place (

here, there,

or

nowhere.)

Here

is the book that you lent me.

There

are the keys that I thought I lost.

Nowhere

have I seen such beautiful

weather.

(8)

•At the examples above. In the first above, the place word here causes the subject

book to come after the verb is.

•In the second example the place word

there causes the subject keys to come after the verb are.

In the last example, the place word

nowhere causes the subject I to come after the verb have.

(9)

The subject and verb can also be inverted after prepositional phrases expressing place. Look at the example below:

In the closet are the clothes that you want.

Around the corner is Sam’s house.

Beyond the mountains lies the town where you will live.

•In the first example, the prepositional phrase of place in the closet causes the subject clothes to come after the verb are.

•At the second example. There is a prepositional phrase of place around the corner. It causes the subject house to come after the verb is.

•In third example, the prepositional phrase of place beyond the mountains causes the subject town to come after the verb lies

(10)

the subject and verb will invert after

place expressions at the beginning of a sentence only when the place

expression is necessary to complete the sentence.

If you are not sure, Please study these

examples below:

In the forest are many exotic birds.

(11)

• In the first sentence above, the subject

birds and verb are are inverted. Why can? The answer is because the place

expression in the forest is needed to complete the idea many exotic birds are...

• In the second example the subject I and the verb walked are not inverted because the idea I walked for many hours is

complete without the place expression in the forest. The place expression is

therefore not needed to complete the sentence.
