“A hComparative
Study of Javanesehand
hthttPoliteness
Performed by 2007 English Department Faculty of Letters Jember University;
Aminullah, 050110101090,2010: 55 pages; English Department Faculty of
Letters Jember University.
Cultural distinction produces different use of language. Each culture has
norm, tradition, and rule in term of living in the society; it obviously includes the
communication between one culture and another. A successful conversation includes
mutually interesting connections between the speakers and the listeners. For a
successful conversation, the partners must achieve an agreement of contributions;
they have to follow the rules of communication, what so-called politeness. Politeness
is one of pragmatic phenomenon that clearly deviates from the norm of cooperation
and has social implication. This thesis describes the politeness strategies in using the
words and utterances in communication among the students in academic year 2007,
faculty of letters Jember University, especially the Javanese and Madurese culture in
showing their politeness. In addition, Java Island with the crowded and high
population make the people in this ethnic spread out in many dialect areas. Javanese
has many dialects that come from the Javanese language. In relation to the politeness,
Javanese has some levels in the use of language that make them politer in daily
communication among others. Actually, Madura Island, which closes to the Java
Island, also gives a big influence in the language use in some Javanese cities. The
focus of the discussion is on the analysis of politeness strategy. This study applies
some theories from the experts of Linguistics especially pragmatics. The theories
from George Yule (1996), Brown and Levinson (1983), Mc Millan (1992), Blaxter
(1996), Kemptson (1977), and some theories from other experts is considers as a
theoretical review related to the topic being discussed. Furthermore, Library or
documentary research is applies in this study. The data used in this study is
qualitative and quantitative data.
Keywords: Politeness, cooperative principle, language acquisition, cultural
distinction,

“A hComparative
Study of Javanesehand
hthttPoliteness
Performed by 2007 English Department Faculty of Letters Jember University;
For a
successful conversation, the partners must achieve an agreement of contributions;
they have to follow the rules of communication, what so-called politeness. Politeness
is one of pragmatic phenomenon that clearly deviates from the norm of cooperation
and has social implication.
