CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study.

At this time in Indonesia, English is very important language in science and technologies described as highly related at all to human life. English is one of the essential languages to learn, because English is an international language used to communicate with other countries. The era of advancement of science and technology is rapidly increasing. It opens of the opportunity to communicate internationally and free market of immediate demands of the Indonesian nation has competitive competence in all areas. Indonesia can no longer simply rely on natural resources and the physical ability to achieve well-being, but should rather rely on the resources professional man. One of the conditions for achieving this is English language skills, particularly to communicate in spoken or writing. The mastery of speaking skills in English is a priority for many second-language or foreign-language learners. “Consequently, learners often evaluate their success in language learning as well as the effectiveness of their English course on the basis of how much they feel they have improved in their spoken language proficiency” (Richard, 2008: 19).

English language has important role. The use of English is more urgency to be able to follow the development. Those are the field of technology and science and information development. English is no longer strange language for us. We need to master English, even the basic one. Because English is as

an international language. It takesimportant rolein language teaching English so that students are able to speak English well. English mastery is a tool for spoken and written communication. English language has different characteristics from other subjects. This difference is the function of language as a mean of communication. It is indicated that learning English is not only learning vocabulary and grammar in the sense of knowledge, but should seek to use or apply that knowledge in communication activities.

Communication is one of the implementation of language function in society as a means of carrying out the business. Many people learn English because they think it will be useful in some way for international communication and travel. Such students of general English often do not have a particular reason for going to English classes, but simply wish to learn to speak, read and write the language effectively for wherever and whenever this might be useful for them (Harmer, 2007:11). Communication takes place whenever two or more human beings come into contact with each another and express their ideas, thoughts and feelings. The students feel dificult to speak English fluently if they only study at school generally. They will get it in real life listening to the native speaker. However, if the school has certain rules and good school environment, it can help the students to speak English well.

Speaking is one of language skills which are interpreted as an expression of idea, opinion, or message with oral language. Speaking is one of four language skill, which is the basic function of language as communication instrument. The students who study at the school which use certain language will

be a good speaker. It is different from the students who study at the other schools. They will have difficulties in using English to speak to each other. It is caused by the condition of the school environment and media that is used in teaching process. So that a certain media must be used to help the students in learning.

In making the students have strong interest in teaching and learning process, especially in learning speaking, the teacher should take the best approach, method, and strategies. Then, the teacher can use media in teaching English. Method are used to help the students in speaking to make the interaction between the teacher and students. Furthermore, the teacher has to prepare the interested aids before teaching learning process has done. In this case, the researcher used visual media in teaching learning process. Furthermore, the teacher use public figure picture media in teaching speaking. Teachers can use the visual media in teaching speaking. Visual media can be defined as something or a tool used to attract students to follow the learning process, because the images can make students more focused on learning (Arsyad, 2014:21). Since, they do not feel that they are forced to learn. They also enable learners to gain new experience in a foreign language that is not always possible during a typical lesson. Visual media do not make students feel bored because the picture contains elements of different colours and shapes. Finally, the teacher hopes visual media can make the students do not get bored in learning. Especially, in English speaking and improve the students' ability to speak English, especially in the classroom and every day in general.
