Sorghum is a high potential plant for food and feed. Sorghum cultivation is
easier than some other cereal crops because it can stand in dry condition. Its
chemical composition is good so that it can be used as alternative food or feed. The
increased of sorghum production and quality can be done by improving soil fertility
especially by organic fertilizing and legume intercropping.
The purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the effect of organic fertilizer and
legumes intercropping on sorghum quality.
The experiment was done from February - July 2000 in Technology and Feed
Science Laboratory; Dairy Nutrition Laboratory, Faculty of Animal Husbandry in
Bogor Agricultural University and Treub Laboratory, Research and Development
Center for Biology, L P I - Bogor. Sorghum forage and grain were taken 100 grams
for each treatment after first harvest. After oven drying, samples were milled and

ready t o analysis i.e. proximate analysis (DM, ash, CP and CF), digestible analysis
and starch analysis. This experiment used Split Plot Design 4 x 3 with 3 replications
consist of 4 fertilizer treatments i.e. no fertilizer, cattle manure, compost and chicken
manure and 3 legume treatments i.e. no legume, Crotalaria sp. and Cujanus cajan.
The data was analyzed by ANOVA, if there was significant differences among
treatments the analysis was continued by using Contrast Orthogonal Test (Stell and
Torrie, 1993).
The results indicated that organic fertilizer and legumes intercropping had
better quality than no organic fertilizer and no legume. Organic fertilizer treatments
i.e. no fertilizer, cattle manure, compost and chicken manure increased crude protein
of sorghum forage and grain (6.80%; 8.18%; 9.19%; 8.05% and 9.17%; 9.32%;
11.85%; 10.30% respectively), but decreased sorghum starch (85.09%; 78.76%;
6 1.58%; 63.59% respectively). Legumes intercropping significantly decrease crude
protein of sorghum grain. Interaction between compost and Crotalarin sp. give the
best nutrient content and digestibility.
