ABSTRACT
The local raw materials: MgC03, y-Ah03 and Si02 have been mixed by using
ball mill along as 48 hours (ratio of powder with water is I: I), dried in the oven at
110°C for 24 hours, sieved until through out 200 mesh and then calcined at 1200°C.
The temperature calcinations has been known from TGAIDTA result. From this step
where the result was found cordierite powder (2MgO. 2AhOJ. 5Si(2) with average
particle size is about 7.78 1IJl1. The next step, that cordierite powder was mixed with
10, 15,20,25, and 30 % (weight) of wood powder with < 100 mesh of grain size, test
material was formed by using slip casting, then each samples were sintered at 1200,
1250, 1300, and 1350°C. The sintered samples are said porous ceramic cordierites
which ready to characterization include: density, porosity, bending strength, Hardness
(Hv), coefficient expansion thermal, XRD analysis and SEM. The experiment result
has been showed that porous ceramics cordierite have density around 0.75 - 1.17
g/cm', porosity: 58 - 63%, bending strength: 0.5 - 2 MPa, hardness (Hv): 0.3 - 1.8
GPa, and coefficient expansion thermal: (2 - 5) x 10 -
