90 teacher used this avenue for hisher student belief in
“What about the good effect of English to our L1? Eg: enrich particularly tech. Terms.” The teacher asked the
student to consider the good effect of English to our L1 in other terms. Therefore, the teacher also asked the student to consider what they believe
in light of what we do. The last avenue is clarifying our feelings. The teacher wrote
“Make the thesis more convincing.” It means the teacher cannot gain the emotional clarity. The teacher‟s feeling said that the thesis was not strong enough.
The teacher asked the student to revise the thesis for the better result.
7. Personal Connections to Teaching
There was a teacher‟s belief in personal connections to teaching. The teachers used this for 30 times in Critical Reading and Writing Class. According
to Gebhard and Oprandy 1999, pp. 15-16 “personal connections to teaching
allows teachers to relate anything in their life experience to teaching, thus encouraging explorations well beyond the teaching act itself.” The personal
connections to teaching were recognized in the form of reflection on written feedback. It could build a good relationship between the teacher and the student in
the class. From those examples, the researcher found that the teacher praised and
appreciated the student‟s writing. The teacher gave an appreciation on the good part of introduction and the good thesis in the paragraph. Moreover, the teacher
also appreciated the student‟s effort for the first project because the student did
91 the best. An interesting topic was also used to give an encouragement for the
student because the student can choose a good topic for the first essay.

7. Personal connections to teaching.
- Good intro.
- Good thesis.
- I appreciate your effort for the first project.
- I would like to congratulate you for
choosing an interesting topic.
- I‟m so happy to have you in my class. I
believe that you‟re in the right track. -
I also love the story of your friend, Vincent. It is simple, but you can learn and get values
to respect other people from the experience.
Richards, Gallo, and Renandya 2001, p. 4 state “teacher-student
relationship to believe in, respect, support and encourage students, learn more about students, find the positive qualities in each student, not to judge the
students, and develop good relationshipsrapport with students” Teacher-student relationship can be seen from the teacher‟s written feedback such as “I‟m so
happy to have you in my class. I believe that you‟re in the right track.” The teacher‟s belief in personal connections to teaching was very clear because the
teacher expressed hisher feelings to have the student in hisher class. The teacher also convinced the student for the student‟s decision.
Furthermore, the teacher also gave a reflection ab out the student‟s
experience to relate the student‟s experience towards the life in the future. The example was used
“I also love the story of your friend, Vincent. It is simple, but
you can learn and get values to respect other people from the experience.
” The
92 teacher loved the way of the student to use other experience for the essay.
Therefore, the student could learn and obtain some values for the student‟s life.
