AN ANALYSIS OF GRENOUILLE’S STRUGGLE TO GET HIS AMBITION IN FILM PERFUME “THE STORY OF A MURDERER” BY TOM TYKWER

ABSTRACT

Novel, poetry, short story, and drama are parts of literary works. By learning them, we can take the messages about the life in the stories; since literature is a picture of human’s life that is written with beautiful language and interesting style. Film is a part of literary work that has the story about human’s life and experience. And also film is a good media to deliver the message of the life. It has a lot of interesting aspects that we could learn from film, one of them is the struggle that done by the main character, Grenouille.

The main purpose of this study is to answer the problems. (1) Why did Grenouille struggle to get his ambition? (2) How did Grenouille struggle to get his ambition? (3) What were the effects of Grenouille’s struggle?

This study uses descriptive because the object of the study is film which is rich with description of the people, place, action, and dialogue. And the approach used in the study is objective approach, because the researcher did not study about anything related about author’s life. Furthermore, the data are taken from script and screenshot of the Perfume “The Story of a Murderer” film by Tom Tykwer.

The result of analysis found that (1) Grenouille struggled to get his ambition because he was interested in the perfume and the scent of a girl. (2) There are two ways of struggle that Grennouille did; the first was physical struggles when Grenouille learned about preservation and his series of murder to collect the scent of the girl, and the second was mental struggles when Grenouille showed his patience to Baldini and felt the regret of himself. (3) The effects that Grenouille caused after doing his struggle was satisfaction from himself because his ambition was fulfilled and fear for the people of Grasse.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the writer presents about the background for conducting the

research. It is includes the background of study, statements of the problems, purposes

of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of key

terms.

1.1Background of Study

Literature is very interesting to discuss because there are so many literary works

around the world. Also, literary works is interesting because it is an expression of

human’s thought, feeling, and experience written in form of poetry, novel, and drama.

Literature is the expression of written works, especially those regarded as having

artistic style. Literature describes the emotion of the writers, it represents their

feelings. Literature has a function as a tool for expressing ideas, concepts, and

thoughts. It also becomes the reflection of someone’s personality. So, it is true that

literature is one of the important parts of human’s life. Literature and human beings

cannot be separated each other because they are interrelated.

According to Rob Pope (2005:60), literature has become narrowed in meaning to

its current dominant sense of creative or imaginative writing of a specifically

aesthetic kind. It means that literature contains very high sense of art, which is very

(12)

There are some literary works which can be elaborated into deep analysis. There

are three genres of literature; they are prose, including novel and short story, poetry,

and drama. Drama, also known as a play, is one of the literary works which contains

dialogues presented by the actors or actresses on the stage in front of the audience.

Pfister (1988) and Chatman (1990), in “A Guide to the Theory of Drama by Manfred

Jahn”, point out that drama is a narrative form that represents or ‘tells’ a story,

sometimes literally so. It means that drama is a show that performs about the dialogue

of a story and happens in a certain setting. Film is a part of drama because it contains

dialogue, setting, and story.

Film is also the happening story in time, (Pamusuk Eneste, 1991:16). This means

that film is the combinations of some situations connected each other and create a

story. With a lot of improvisation, the director could make a film able to arouse the

emotion of the viewers. Also, film will show how people act, behave, and manner.

Film is a part of the drama, one of the literary works. It contains many valuable

lessons, messages, and entertainments. The readers can learn and take many valuable

things through the film related to the problems in daily life. Film always gives

interesting and different story to the viewers. In relation to this study, the film entitled

Perfume “The Story of a Murderer”, directed by Tom Tykwer in 2006 and based on a best-selling 1985 novel from Patrick Suskind, is analyzed because it is one of good

example film which tells interesting story. Ben Whishaw as Jean-Baptiste Grenouille

struggled to get his ambition to preserve the smell of woman in order to create the

(13)

Considering the above background, the writer wants to conduct a literary study

with title “Grenouille’s Struggle to get his Ambition in Perfume “The Story of a

Murderer””, in which it has some lessons for the reader, especially about principles of life. As we know that people cannot live without struggling in the world, but

struggle to get everything we want without considering the effect to another and

ourselves is improper.

1.2Statements of the Problem

1. Why did Grenouille struggle to get his ambition?

2. How did Grenouille struggle to get his ambition?

3. What were the effects of Grenouille’s struggle?

1.3Purposes of the Study

1. To explain why Grenouille struggled to get his ambition.

2. To describe how Grenouille struggled to get his ambition.

3. To explain the effects of Grenouille’s struggle.

1.4Significance of the Study

This study is expected to provide a description of the important knowledge about

human being, especially when the readers face the same situation in their life. So, it

can be used by the readers to anticipate a situation that may happen in their life. The

It is also able to be used as source of information and reference for students and

lecturers of English Department who are interested in analyzing the literary works,

especially film.

1.5Scope and Limitation

The scope of this study is Grenouille’s struggles to get his ambition and the

limitations are the reason why Grenouille struggled to get his ambition, the way how

Grenouille struggled, and to know the effects of Grenouille’s struggles.

1.6Definition of Key Terms

a. Struggle is an act of struggling; to put a great effort on something.

b. Ambition is a strong desire to do or achieve something.

c. Film is a story or event recorded by a camera as a series of moving images

and shown in cinema or on television.

d. Perfume “The Story of a Murderer” is a film directed by Tom Tykwer in
