This thesis is entitled Face-threatening Act Strategt in Morton
Thompson's
novelentitled 'TlteCry and the Covenant".The reasonfor choosing
'face-tlreatening
the topic
act strategy'is basedon the researcher's
cwiositv in
ana,lyzingpolitenessphenomenafrom different points of view basedon Briwn
andLevinson'sface-threatening
strategy.This thesishastwo objectives.First, it is
to know how the face-threatening
act sfategy is usedby the characters'utterances
basedon Brown and Levinson's face-threateningact itrategy. Second,it is how

the comparisonof characters'FTA in Morton ihompson's novel entitled ..The
Cry andthe'Covenanf'.
The dataof this researchare takenfrom a novel entitled 'The Cry and the
Covenant'written by Morton Thompson.In analyzing the data, the researcher
used qualitative descriptivemethod.In conductingthe research,the researcher
took soinesteps;readingthe novel carefrrlly,identifuing the data,classiSringand
simplifiing the datathat containFTAs strategies.
In this research,183 Face-threatening
actsutteranceswere found: 59 out
of 183 are Bald-on record utterances(32.2%), 57 are Positive politeness
utterances
(31.1%),35areNegativePoliteness
utterances
(lg.l%) and32areOffrecordutterances
(17.5).The Bald-onrecordstrategieshasthe highestfrequency
of useamongothers.
Among four strategies,TheresemostlyusedBald-onrecordstrategy.She
used22 out of 59 Bald-onrecordutterances
{37.3%).Shedecidedto threalln her
hearerby this strategybecauseshehashigh power differential to her hearer(her
sgns).IgnazPhilipp mostlyusedPositivePolitenessstrategies.
He used22 outof
57 PositivePolitenessutterances(36.6%).He decidedto-threatenhis hearerby
Positive Politenessstrategiesbecausethose strategiesattempt to minim ize the
threat to the hearer'spositive face. In addition, IgnazPhilipp dlso mostly used
Negative Politenessstrategies.He used lt out of 35 Ggative politeness
utterances(31.4%).He decidedto threatenhis hearerby Negativepoliteness
strategiesbecausethose strategiestried to satisfy the hearer'snegativeface by
grvingoption whetherhe would or not do the act.lgnazphilipp **try usedoff-He
