Listening as part of language skills 1isS the first step to leam a foreign
language and also leads to the mastery of the other language skills. Although
listening is an important language skill, it seernsto be negiected in teachtng
learning process. In 2004. the IndonesianMinistry of National Education stated
that the EBTANAS. the nationalfinal exam.would includea speciallisteningtest.
'ihis
piece ofnelvs caught secondaryschoolsunpreparedsince many ofthem have
given
enough training for their students in listening, Listening cannot be
not
learned in one or tp'o exercises,it takes a long time to have enoughability to
iisten. The teachershould give a great amount oflistening exercisesand they also
have to knorv the problems faced by their students in listening to prepare the
studentsweil in facing the listening test.
Considering the reason above, the rwiter conducted research into the
ability and the problems of secondarystudentsin listening to English pop songs.
'fhe ',vriter
chose SMUK Mgr. SoegijapranataPasuruan,as the piace to conduct
the researoh. The subjects chosen were fifty five second grade students of the
school. These studentswere chosenbecausethev rvill have a listening test in
EBTANAS in 2005. This researchwas held to seetheir abiliry*and the problems

limitation given b-vthe teacher. In the listening test, the *Titer played the songs
three timcs, and each time the songs\tere bcing played the studentshad to write
down as rnany different vocabulary items as they could, this is to measuretheir
vocabulary achievement. To figure out their problems in listening to pop songs.
the writer gave questiotrnairesto the students and the resuit of these
questionnairesshowedthe problems faced by the students.
The resuits of this study show'that students' vocabtliary achievement is
beiow lifty percent of the amount of vocabulary of the songs. The rnajor problem
encounteredby most studentsfound in the first song is concentrationon listening.
The major problem encounteredby most students {bund in the second song is
their ability in comprehendingthe content of the song.
Theseresults can be used as a guideline for the English teachersof SMUK
Pasuruanin teaching listening. Another implication is that
Soegtjapranata

songscan be usedas interestingmaterials in teaching listening.
