Key words: slang, contextual meaning of slang.
Language has an important role for human beings as a means of
communication. People have different ways to express their ideas to others either
in formal or in informal situation. As an alternative to communicate with others in
informal situation, slang is used by most of people in English Speaking Countries.
Slang is one of language variety. Slang was used as a daily language by teenagers
who like simplicity and combine it with slang words or phrases. They use slang as
identify to their society and for social gap. Slang also appears in some other
informal situations like in the movie script, a play and other situations.
The goals of this research are (1) to find out the types of slang found in the
movie script of “Twilight Saga Eclipse” by Melissa Rosenberg and (2) to find out
the contextual meaning of slang in the movie script of “Twilight Saga Eclipse” by
Melissa Rosenberg.
This research used qualitative research design. The data source of this
research is the movie script of “Twilight Saga Eclipse” by Melissa Rosenberg
meanwhile the data is slang.
Based on the research result, the writer collected and identified (1) there
are 31 words or phrases as slang in the movie script of “Twilight Saga Eclipse” by
Melissa Rosenberg. The slang is divided into two types that are conversational

routines and vernacular spellings. There are 21 slang words or phrases as
conversational routines and 10 slang words or phrases as vernacular spellings. (2)
The contextual meaning of slang words or phrases can be found from its context
and depends on the context or situation. And the contextual meaning is the
relationship between conversation and the situation where the conversation is
used. The meaning of slang words or phrases as conversational routines can be
found from its context. The meaning of slang words or phrases as vernacular
spelling still can be found by dictionary.
According to the study, the writer suggests that students of English
Education Department can learn slang trough movie script because it contains a
lot of slang words or phrases. Besides, the lecturers should teach the slang clearly
and easily to be comprehended by students in order to enrich their vocabulary and
skill in mastering English.

Bahasa mempunyai peranan penting dalam kehidupan manusia sebagai
alat komunikasi. Manusia mempunyai cara yang berbeda-beda untuk
mengekspresikan ide mereka dengan orang laing dalam situasi yang formal atau
resmi maupun informal atau tidak resmi. Sebagai alternatif untuk berkomunikasi
dengan orang lain dalam situasi yang informal, kebanyakan orang di negara yang
menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa nasional cenderung lebih suka untuk
menggunakan bahasa slang. Slang adalah salah satu variasi bahasa. Slang pada
mulanya digunakan sebagai bahasa sehari-hari oleh para remaja yang cenderung
lebih suka menggunakan bahasa Inggris yang mudah dicerna dan simpel serta
digabungkan dengan kata-kata slang atau bahasa prokem atau gaul. Mereka
meggunakan slang sebagai identitas kelompok. Slang juga sering muncul dalam
berbagai situasi yang informal seperti dalam naskah film, drama,dll.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) tipe-tipe slang yang ditemukan
didalam naskah film ”Twilight Saga Eclipse” karya Melissa Rosenberg dan (2)
mencari makna slang sesuai konteks dalam naskah film ”Twilight Saga Eclipse”
karya Melissa Rosenberg.
Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kualitatif. Sumber data dalam

penelitian ini adalah naskah film ”Twilight Saga Eclipse” karya Melissa
Rosenberg sedangkan datanya adalah slang.
Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, penulis menemukan dan mengidentifikasi (1)
ada 31 kata atau frasa yang termasuk dalam kategori slang yang terdapat dalam
naskah film ”Twilight Saga Eclipse” karya Melissa Rosenberg dan terbagi
menjadi 2 tipe yakni slang yang termasuk percakapan sehari-hari dan slang yang
termasuk bahasa atau ejaan sehari-hari. Ada 21 slang yang termasuk percakapan
sehari-hari dan 10 slang yang termasuk bahasa atay ejaan sehari-hari. (2) Makna
slang sesuai dengan konteks dapat ditemukan dalam konteks kalimat dan
tergantung pada konteks dan situasi. Dan makna kontekstual adalah hubungan
antara percakapan dan situasi di mana percakapan itu dipakai. Makna slang dalam
tipe percakapan sehari-hari dapat diperoleh sesuai dengan konteks kalimat. Makna
slang dalam tipe bahasa atau ejaan sehari-hari masih dapat dijumpai dalam kamus.
Berdasarkan penelitian ini, penulis menyarankan bahwa mahasiswa
Program Studi Pendidikan bahasa Inggris seharusnya mempelajari slang melalui
naskah film karena didalamnya terdapat banyak kata atau frasa yang termasuk
slang. Dan para dosen seharusnya mengajar slang dengan jelas dan mudah
dipahami oleh mahasiswa agar dapat memperkaya kosakata mereka dan
keterampilan penguasaan bahasa Inggris.
