Report Highlights:
USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) and the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA) held
a technical seminar to promote wood frame construction in Peru. The one and a half day seminar
focused on educating the Peruvian housing and construction sector on Southern Yellow Pine as a
construction material that is suitable for use in Peru.

General Information:
USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) Lima and the Southern Forest Products Association
(SFPA) partnered to sponsor a technical seminar on the use of Southern Yellow Pine in construction at
CITE Madera, Peru’s Wood Innovation Center, on July 20-21, 2017.
To increase exports of southern yellow pine to Peru, the FAS Lima and SFPA are working with CITE
Madera to increase the housing sector’s knowledge and capacity in the area of wood frame construction.
This sector is currently underdeveloped and has potential for growth. CITE Madera is the Peruvian
government agency that promotes the development of wood based industries in Peru through technical
assistance, capacity building, and technical support. This training focused on southern yellow pine’s
common uses, grading systems, wood-frame construction practices, advantages and disadvantages of
wood construction, and myths and realities of natural disasters. The 50 seminar attendees included

government officials, academia, association members, and lumber importers, distributors, and
wholesalers.
