Sebelas Maret Universirty. Surakarta.
This research belongs to a descriptive-qualitative research. It focuses on the
sentences containing wh-question in the novel Valentine Princess. Besides, this
research also finds out the types of wh-questions and finds out the quality in terms
of accuracy, acceptability, and readability.
This research applies total sampling and purposive sampling technique. The
data used in this study consist of two types, primary and supporting data. The
main data consist of sentences containing wh-questions and assessment from
raters and respondents. The supporting data were taken from the other
information of this novel such as the synopsis of the novel. The researcher
collected the data, classified and analyzed them and then drew the conclusion
from the analyzed data.
The data found in this novel shows that there are 5 types of wh-questions.
They are how, why, who, what, and when. How (13 data or 15.6%), why (14 data
or 16.8%), who (7 data or 8.4%), what (48 data or 57.8%), and when (1 data or
1.2%). The most dominant classification type of wh-word is what.
The results of the research are: The analysis of accuracy shows that 69 data
(83%) are accurate, 14 data (17%) are less accurate. The analysis on the
acceptability of the translation shows that there are 78 data (94%)are acceptable, 5
data (6%) are less acceptable. The analysis of readability shows that there are 65
data (78%) are readable, 17 data (20%) are less readable, 1 data (2%) are
unreadable.
This study is expected to be used as additional knowledge to other
researchers, teachers, students in English Department who want to know more
about translation and translation quality assessment, especially students of
translation studies in translating wh-question.
