BOOSTING STUDENTS’ PARTICIPATION IN LEARNING ENGLISH
THROUGH ICE-BREAKING ACTIVITY

This research was aimed to boost students‟ participation in learning English through ice-breaking activities. It was used Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was conducted at the VIII G students of SMP N 1 Purwokerto in academic year 2013/2014 as the subject of the research. The data were collected through observation, questionnaire, documentation, and test as secondary data.
The result of this research showed that there were improvement of students‟ participation. The first data from pre-obseravtion showed that students participation only achieved
30,86%. In Cycle 1, students‟ participation increased 58,09%, and it could achie ve 70,26% in Cycle 2. Thus, students‟ participation was higher than 65% as the success indicator. Besides that, the result was supported by the result of questionnaire that got positive response from the students, and test result that also showed improvement. The average score of students achievement in pre-test was 69,26, in Cycle 1 showed 71,43 and 86,67 in Cycle 2. Therefore, the improvement of students‟ achievement in Cycle 1 was 3,13% , and 25,13% in Cycle 2. Looking at the great result, it can be concluded that ice-breaking activity was able to boos t students‟ participation well in learning English.
