ABSTRACT
This paper explores how L2 learners deal with their barriers in speaking English. The writer
wants to know the Communication Strategies (CS) they use in English Classroom in responding
to English teacher’s questions. It is significant for the English teachers to know what
communication strategies used by their students so that they can understand what the students
mean and the interaction between teacher and the students in teaching learning activity can be
maintained. This study observed 100 students in 4 classes in SMA Kristen Satya Wacana which
well known as a school that requires the students to speak in 100% English during English
Classroom. The writer chooses XI grade students in Science and Social Class which use the same
handout and material. For the analysis, the writer uses traditional conceptualization of defining
CS by Dornyei (1995). In the observation, the writer found that students used several CS. The
CS mostly used was Code Switching, Topic Avoidance, Appeal for help, and Stalling/Time
Gaining. CS was used to overcome their limitation of speaking English, such as grammar,
fluency, and mostly vocabulary.
Key words: communication strategies, classroom interaction, students’ respond, teacher’s
question, and second language acquisition.
