ABSTRACT

  Slang is viewed as the most popular language in the society. It is identical with young generation’s language, although there are few of them do not understand about it. In addition, people (especially adults) find difficulty in understanding the slang words. This study is conducted to see how well respondents from different age groups understand the slang words used in this study and the factors that influence their understanding.

  There are forty six slang words used in this study. The questionnaires are distributed to 60 respondents to find out their understanding of newly- emerged words and the factors that influence their understanding. Then, these slang words are analyzed by using the meaning of the words in kamus bahasa

  

gaul. The writer compares the respondents’ understanding of the slang words

from three different age groups in the society.

  The result of this study shows the difference understanding of respondent’s from different age groups and the factor which influences the understanding. The percentage of teenager respondents is 82.6%. It means they have very good understanding of slang words. Young adult respondents understand 95.65% slang words. They also have very good understanding of the slang words. The rest age groups respondents is adult. The percentage of their understanding of the slang words is 80.43%. So, both teenager and young adult respondent have better understanding than adult respondents. The factor that influences the respondent’s understanding is age. Both educational background and job are not become the factors that influence respondents’ understanding of slang words which is used in the questionnaires in this study.

ABSTRAK

Slang dipandang sebagai bahasa paling popular di dalam masyarakat.

  Ini identik dengan bahasa para generasi muda, meskipun ada beberapa dari mereka tidak memahami tentang ini. Sebagai tambahan, orang usia dewasa menemui kesulitan dalam memahami kata-kata slang. Studi ini diadakan untuk melihat seberapa bagus responden dari kelompok umur yang berbeda memahami kata-kata slang yang digunakan dalam studi ini dan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi pemahaman mereka.

  Ada empat puluh enam kata slang yang digunakan pada studi ini. Kuesioner didistribusikan ke enam puluh responden untuk mengetahui pemahaman mereka pada kata-kata munculan baru dan factor-faktor yang mempengaruhi pemahaman mereka. Kemudian kata-kata slang ini dianalisa dengan menggunakan arti kata-kata tersebut dalam kamus bahasa gaul. Penulis membandingkan pemahaman para responden tentang kata-kata slang dari tiga kelompok umur yang berbeda dalam masyarakat.

  Hasil dari studi ini menunjukkan perbedaan pemahaman dari responden dari kelompok umur yang berbeda. persentase dari responden remaja adalah 82.6%. Ini berarti bahwa mereka mempunyai pemahaman yang sangat bagus. Dewasa muda memahami 95.65% kata-kata slang. Mereka juga mempunyai pemahaman yang sangat bagus pada kata-kata slang. Responden sisanya adalah dewasa. Persentase pemahaman mereka pada kata-kata slang adalah 80.43%. Jadi, keduanya remaja dan dewasa muda mempunyai pemahaman lebih bagus dari responden dewasa. Faktor yang mempengaruhi pemahaman para responden adalah umur. Keduanya latar belakang pendidikan dan pekerjaan tidak menjadi factor yang mempengaruhi pemahaman para responden pada kata-kata slang yang digunakan di kuesioner pada studi ini.
