LEARNING STRATEGIES USED BYENGLISH DEPARTMENT’S
STUDENTS
Abstract
In learning English as an International language, learners usually faced some problems during
their learning process. Each learner may have different problems in learning English. In order
to be better in English, learners have to find out what learning strategies which can help them
in learning English. Based on that, the paper tries to investigate the four language skills
related problems faced by English Language Education Program’s (ELEP) students and the
important of using learning strategies in reaching foreign language by English Language
Education Program’s students. The participants were 75 students of 2014 of English
Language Education Program. The researcher used two questionnaires to collect the data. The
data was analyzed based on the classification of Pawapatcharaudom (2007) and on Oxford’s
Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL, Version 7.0, 1989) framework. The result
shows that the participants usually find some problems during their learning process in the
area of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The result also indicates that the
participants tend to use various kinds of learning strategies in order to comprehend English
skills. The findings can be a valuable resource to consider appropriate ways of using those
strategies to improve English teaching and learning practice.
