Dealing With Unmotivated Children At Kids2success.

ABSTRACT

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
Students sometimes feel lazy while studying in class. There are some
reasons why they behave like that. One of the reasons is they do not have
motivation in their study anymore. Dealing with unmotivated students is
not easy. First, we need to know the causes students lack motivation and
then find the best way to increase their motivation.
I chose the topic “Dealing with Unmotivated Students at
KIDS2SUCCESS” because it is an interesting problem that I found while I
did my internship at KIDS2SUCCESS (henceforth K2S). At that time there
were some unmotivated students and I found that facing unmotivated

students was quite annoying. For example, they did not want to do the
exercises and they did not pay attention to what the teacher said.
Moreover, they did not study properly and these disturbed the learning
process. The worst is this problem became their habit in their study at
school and at home. In order to overcome this problem, I had to find some
good solutions to increase their motivation in studying.

In this term paper I analyze the causes and effects of the problem,
and I also state three potential solutions to overcome the problem of
unmotivated students.

B. Identification of the Problem
1. What makes the students unmotivated in their study?
2. What will happen if students are unmotivated?
3. How should the teacher motivate students in order to make the
learning process effective?

C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study
The objectives of writing this term paper are to know the causes of
students being unmotivated, the effects of unmotivated students, and to
find out the best solutions to increase their motivation in their study.
The main benefit of writing this term paper is to give input to the
teachers at K2S when teaching unmotivated students; so that they can
teach the students better. Also more generally, it is expected that the
suggestions proposed in this term paper may help teachers and me to
deal with unmotivated students.

D. Description of the Institution
K2S is an educational course which is designed to teach English
language to children of age 2.5 to 18 years old. In K2S students can
choose a private course or a group course continuously from the first level

to the highest level. There are some levels in K2S. The lowest level is
Runner, the second is Sprinter, the third is Jumper, and the highest one is
General English.
K2S is a franchise company from America. It has expanded throughout
12 countries including Indonesia. K2S first was established in June 2005 in
Bandung and the location is at Taman Kopo II, Ruko 2A No. 55. Now it
has a subsidiary in Setrasari Plaza A2.
K2S’s teachers do not only teach students to learn English. They also
help develop students’ intellectual, emotional, and creative skills.
The vision of the instituition is to create an English education center
with a new fun way of learning for students. K2S’s mission is learning
while playing and interacting with others. K2S also helps to develop the
students’ self-esteem, creativity, and concentration.
Today, K2S is quite well-known to people in Bandung. It has been
proved by the increase of the number of students every month. K2S also
maintains its quality by providing qualified teachers and interesting lessons
for the students. Therefore, there are many students at K2S who have
already been studying there for a few years.

E. Method of Study

The methods that I use to gather data for this term paper are doing
observation, writing notes in my internship journal, doing library research,
browsing the Internet, and interviewing. I did the observation during
internship at K2S. I observed the students’ behaviour while studying and

3

Maranatha Christian University

the way the teachers taught the students. Then, I wrote down my
observation during my internship in a journal. At that moment, I wrote
about the activities and the problems that happened during my internship.
Afterwards, I did some library research by reading a few books. Besides
doing library research, I also browsed some theories from the Internet to
support my statements. Moreover, I interviewed the teachers in K2S to get
information about the students’ characteristics in their classes.

F. Limitation of the Study
I limit my research to four students only who are unmotivated in their
study when I did my internship at K2S in Setrasari Plaza A2, Bandung.
Two of the students are four and seven years old and the others are ten
years old. My analysis in this term paper is about the causes, the effects
and the solutions to the problem. This analysis is based on my experience
while I did my internship at K2S from January 8th until February 13th 2009.

G. Organization of the Term Paper
This term paper starts with the Abstract, a short summary of the whole
term paper in bahasa Indonesia. The Abstract is followed by the
Declaration of Originality; after that is the Acknowledgements, which
contains my expression of gratitude to those who have helped and
supported me during my process in doing term paper; then there is the
Table of Contents, which is followed by four chapters. Chapter 1 is the
introduction to the discussion, Chapter 2 is the Problem Analysis, Chapter

4

Maranatha Christian University

3 contains the potential solutions for the problem, and then Chapter 4 is
the Conclusion, which contains the chosen solutions for the problem and
my suggestions. Next is the Bibliography, which contains the sources of
information used in the whole work. And the last part is the Appendices,
which contains the flowchart.

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION

While teaching, a teacher often finds that there are students who have
no motivation in their study. It will obstruct the learning process and will
make the students get a bad achievement in their study. The students do
not pay attention to the lesson. They also will do their task slowly and even
cannot finish it. Therefore, a teacher should be able to overcome this
problem in order to increase students’ motivation.
The students become unmotivated in their study because of some
causes. It can be because the way their teachers explain the lessons is
not clear, the standard of material is too high, and the environment is
inconvenient for study. After knowing the causes of student becoming
unmotivated, teachers can choose the right solution to deal with the
problem.
In this chapter, I state and explain the chosen solution from the three
potential solutions that I have analyzed in the previous chapters. The best
solution for the problem of dealing with unmotivated students at K2S is a
combination of changing the way teachers explain and providing students
with a good environment.

Pintrich (314) states that a teacher’s explanation affects students’
motivation. Changing the way teachers explain also influences the way
students study and also helps increase students’ motivation. Clear
explanations will make students understand and study better. Providing a
good environment is also important for the students to study. A quiet and
silent place is a good environment to make students study well. It will
make students can be more motivated to study.
In my opinion, the combination of these two solutions changing the way
teachers explain and providing students with a good environment is better
than only choosing one of them. For example, teachers explain in good
way which makes the students understand the lesson. However, if the
environment is not comfortable for study, such as there is a lot of noise,
the students can find it difficult to follow the explanation from the teachers.
The other solution, that is, the standardization of the lesson with students’
capabilities is not chosen because the students can still be motivated in
their study if the teacher can explain the lesson well. Therefore, the
combination of solutions of changing the way teachers explain and
providing the students with a good environment can motivate students
better to study well.
At the end of this term paper, I want the readers to know that dealing
with unmotivated students is not easy. Besides the teachers’ help,
students still need help from others to motivate them to study, such as
parents when they are studying. Parents can help students when they are
studying in their home. For example, parents can accompany their childen

when studying, or create a good environment without distraction. However,
by applying the solutions given, I hope that unmotivated students can
increase their motivation and show a good performance in their study.
