The SDGs are …

A set of 17 goals for the world’s future, through 2030

Backed up by a set of 169 detailed Targets

Nations

Agreed to by nearly all the world’s nations, on 25
Sept 2015

IDEAS FOR ACTION

SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements

inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
City and regional governments need to be empowered constitutionally:
legally, fiscally, and with institutional capacity.

• Urbanization will have a massive impact on countries’ ability to
develop sustainably
• In some countries much of the urbanization is slum-led and
undermines sustainable development

Productive cities are the key to decent jobs, employment for all, and
thereby the reduction of poverty
Sustainable infrastructure is essential for development, job creation
and environmental quality, but needs a wider frame of effective land and
labor markets, city government led regulation, and vibrant city economy

IDEAS FOR ACTION

SDG 11 is Critical to:

• Promote integrated approaches (infrastructure, services, housing)
• Enhancing urban planning that promotes youth participation,
gender equality, compact cities and healthy rural settlements;
• Strengthening resilience to reduce the loss of lives, assets,
housing and infrastructure to natural disasters;
• Preventing slums by ensuring equitable access to affordable,
durable housing, basic services; and land tenure security;
• Providing access to affordable housing and affordable and
accessible transport for shorter, safer, and healthier commutes
