Racial Prejudice and Discrimination in Crash and Gran Torino:
Relationship and Effects
Abstract
Globalization triggers the existence of plural societies, which in turns may also cause
racial prejudice and discrimination. What happen in the real world may be depicted in movies

since they reflect people’s cultural mindset and the spirit of the era. Taking Crash and Gran
Torino as its objects, this study purposed to investigate how racial prejudice and racial
discrimination are expressed in Crash and Gran Torino and how they affect the victims. The
analysis done based on racism theory exposes that racial prejudice is depicted by expressing
cognitive prejudice, affective prejudice and conative prejudice and racial discrimination is
depicted by othering the other races. Victims of racial prejudice and discrimination behaved in
accordance with how they were prejudiced and discriminated, such as by equipping themselves
with weapons whenever they went, which means their insecurity. These findings are expected to
make the readers more aware of different forms of racial prejudice and discrimination in social
interaction and how they might affect the victims, so that they know how to properly respond to
such prejudice and discrimination and, thus, promote multiculturalism.
