DETECTION OF STREPTOCOCCUS PNEUMONIAE IN THROAT SWABS OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS AT JATINANGOR.

ABSTRACT

Community-acquired infection is an important problem all over the world. It
occurs mainly in crowded areas, where human contact is easy. Streptococcus
pneumoniae is a common bacterium that causes community-acquired pneumonia.
Teachers have the tendency to transmit this infection to other staffs and also students,
in this circumstance, school teachers become the carriers.
The main objective of this study is to screen the teachers residing in
Jatinangor for Streptococcus pneumoniae. Bacterial isolation was done by taking
throat swabs of 32 elementary school teachers in Jatinangor.
Streptococcus pneumoniae identification was done by culturing the specimen
in the blood agar. Additional tests, such as the gram staining, catalase test and also
the optochin susceptibility test was also carried out for positive identification of
Streptococcus pneumoniae.
The procedures were carried out at the Microbiology Laboratory at Fakultas
Kedokteran Universitas Padjadjaran.
The result revealed that from 32 elementary school techers,from 2 schools,
SDN Cikuda and SDN Neglasari, none of the samples have Streptococcus
pneumoniae.
