Pada masa yang akan datang, sangat diperlukan pembangunan jembatan yang
melintasi sungai besar dan jembatan yang dapat menghubungkan pulau-pulau di tanah
air. Keadaan ini menuntut jembatan dengan bentang panjang mutlak diperlukan
terutamanya untuk melintasi sungai besar dan teluk yang ada di Indonesia dan sebagai
prasarana transportasi hasil tambang/ hutan yang melayani kebutuhan export-impor
komoditi. Jembatan bentang panjang merupakan konstruksi jembatan dimana seluruh
beban lalu lintas dan gaya – gaya yang bekerja dipikul oleh kabel pemikul yang
menumpu pada dua pasang menara. Jembatan bentang panjang dibagi menjadi dua tipe,
yaitu: jembatan gantung dan jembatan cable stayed.
Jembatan gantung merupakan suatu kabel yang melintas diatas sungai atau laut
dengan lantai (struktur jalur jalan) digantung pada kabel tersebut. Sedangkan jembatan
cable stayed adalah jembatan yang menggunakan beberapa kabel yang menghubungkan
jalan dengan pylon. Kabel ini diikat dengan tegangan dan lurus (tidak melentur kecuali
disebabkan berat sendiri). Yang menjadi ciri khusus dari kedua jenis jembatan ini terlihat
dari tatanan konfigurasi kabel yang dimilikinya. Sistem kabel merupakan komponen
utama pada jembatan bentang panjang yang menjadi faktor utama terhadap kekuatan
pada dek yang dimiliki jembatan bentang panjang.
Menurut hokum hooke dan Walther (1988), jembatan cable stayed lebih kuat dari
pada jembatan suspension. Hal ini disebabkan karena semakin panjang bentang, semakin
besar lendutan yang dihasilkan. Panjang kabel yang dimiliki jembatan suspension lebih
panjang dibandingkan dengan panjang kabel pada jembatan cable stayed. Pada penelitian
ini menunjukkan bahwa Jembatan Cable Stayed menggunakan tipe kabel paralel Vsl 7 –
wire strand Astm A 416 – 74 dengan Ф 15.2 mm, 28 buah (± 80mm) dan memiliki berat
total jembatan 108273.128 kg, memiliki kekuatan (67%) lebih besar dari pada Jembatan
Suspension yang menggunakan kabel tipe locked coil rope dengan Ф 575 mm dan

memiliki berat 162574.71 kg sebesar (33%), sehingga lendutan yang dimiliki Jembatan
Cable Stayed lebih Kecil (0.25 cm) dibandingkan dengan Jembatan Suspension (0.26
cm).
