LEARNERS’ STRATEGIES IN DEVELOPING CREATIVE SPEECH
Lilian Fanggreani

Abstract
Learner’s strategies are some actions to make better achievements or performances.
In speaking English as a foreign language, learners apply some strategies. This
study was to answer the research question: “What are learner’s strategies to develop
their creative speech in speaking class.” The writer used the four strategies
suggested by Andrew Cohen (1998) and Elaine Tarone in Saville (2006). The
strategies from Cohen were: retrieval strategies, rehearsal strategies, cover
strategies and communication strategies. The other strategies suggested by Tarone
in Saville (2006) were: avoidance, paraphrase, conscious transfer, Appeal for
assistance, and mime. The definition of conscious transfer and communication
strategies are the same. The concept of those strategies is using the native language
as a basic to learn the target language. All of these strategies were really useful to
get the presentation going. The participants of the study were four students of 2010
academic years at the English Department of Satya Wacana Christian University
who took Public Speaking Class. The data for the study were collected from
observation of the presentation and interview from four students in two speaking
classes (group B and D). The data analysis showed that all of the participants used
strategies. Almost all of the strategies suggested by Cohen and Tarone were used
by the participants.
