Dealing With Incompetence Teacher Assistant To Teach English in Calf Class At TK Bintang Mulia, Bandung.

ABSTRACT

persiapan sebelum kelas dimulai.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
In order to be competent in English, people must experience a learning
process during their lives. They need to practice English much, do many
exercises and apply it daily. For those who may be wanting to be an
English teacher, they even need to practice teaching English more often.
Jennifer Wagaman states that “Student teaching, or practice teaching, is
one of the most important and formative experience of every teacher-intraining” (par. 1). By having a lot of practice in teaching English, the
teacher would gain a lot of experience in teaching students English.

However, sometimes the process does not run smoothly.
This happened when I did my internship at TK Bintang Mulia. Basically,
there is a home room teacher and one teacher assistant in every class in
this school. I did some observation to notice the teaching process there. I
notice that the home room teacher will teach English every Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday. Meanwhile, the teacher assistant will teach
English every Tuesday and Thursday.

During my observation, I recognized that the teacher assistant was not
ready to teach English for children of three to four years old. After I did an
informal interview with her, I found out that she was graduated from
Mandarin department. The fact that she was graduated from Mandarin
department, makes me realize that it must be hard for her to teach an
English lesson well.
Considering the important role of a teacher to teach the student in
the learning process, in this term-paper, I would like to analyze the reason
why the teacher assistant is not ready to teach English, what are the

effects of that problem and how she can be more ready in teaching
English.

B. Identification of the Problem
The problem that I am going to analyze will be summarized in the
following questions:
1. Why is the teacher assistant in Calf class not ready to teach
English?
2. What are the effects of an unprepared teacher assistant to the
children?
3. What should she do to prepare herself teaching English?

C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study
The objectives of the study are described in the following sentences.
The first is to find out the causes of why the teacher assistant in Calf class
is not ready to teach English. The second objective is to find out the
effects of the unprepared teacher for her students. In addition, the

objective is to find out the ways to be a better prepared teacher especially
in teaching English.
The benefit for the teacher assistant of TK Bintang Mulia is she can be
more prepared when she has to teach English; therefore the lesson will be
delivered well. For the readers, especially for the people who want to
become a teacher in the future, this study could be useful as their
references. This study will also make them realize the importance of
educational background in relation to their job. Finally, for myself in writing
the term paper, I can get the knowledge on how to be a good English
teacher for children of three to four years old.

D. Description of the Institution
TK Bintang Kecil started in 1997, but since 2009 TK Bintang Kecil
changed its name into TK Bintang Mulia. TK Bintang Mulia (henceforth, TK
BM) is located in Jl. Kopo Permai I Blok A no.0. TK BM is an educational
institution which is established and programmed to give English to young
learners. TK BM does not only provide English lesson, but also some other
lessons like Indonesian, Mandarin, mathematics, art, sports, science, and
social science. TK BM is established to make the children healthy, smart,

independent, have character and to have faith in God, in order to increase
their pleasure in learning.
The vision of TK BM is to provide education based on integrity,
transformative and holistic system which is supported by latest
professional supports. Besides the vision, TK BM also has a mission,
which is to become a leader in Christian education provider that focuses in
science and integrity.

E. Method of the Study
The topic of my term paper is based on the analysis of the problem that
I found when I was doing my internship last semester. The data was taken
based on my observation in the class during the teacher assistant taught
the children. I also did an informal interview with her. I would like to use my
observation and my experience to find the best solution to the topic that I
am going to discuss in my study. To support the analysis I take some
references from the library, online publications and my internship journal.

F. Limitation of the Study
The focus of my analysis is on one teacher assistant who has to teach
English at Calf class at TK BM. I observed her for three months. In order to
find the best solution, I will analyze the causes and the effects of the
problem, and the potential solutions to increase the English language
quality of the teacher assistant with its positive and negative effects.

G. Organization of the Term Paper
The term paper starts with the Abstract, and the next part is the
Declaration of Originality, which is followed by the Acknowledgement,
which contains the expression of gratitude to the people who are related to
the writing in this term paper. After that, I put the Table of Contents, which
presents the contents of term paper with the page number.
This term paper contains the following chapters. Chapter I explains the
introduction of the study. Chapter II explains all the causes and effects of
the problem. Chapter III explains the potential solutions related to the
causes of the problem. Chapter IV is about two suitable chosen solutions
which are supported with some theories and examples to solve the
problem.
The next part I will include Bibliography, which contains the sources of
all the theories that are used in the study, and Appendix, which contains
the flowchart of the problem.

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION

In the previous chapters, I have analyzed the problem that occurred
when I was doing my internship. The problem is the teacher assistant in
Calf class is not ready to teach English for children of 3-4 years old. The
causes of this problem are the teacher assistant was graduated from
Mandarin department and she did not make any preparation before the
class. The effects of the problems are first, the students lose
concentration, the second they will not understand the lesson. I provide
three potential solutions to solve the problem. There are, the teacher
assistant should prepare the lesson before the class, she should attend an
English course, and the school should find a new English teacher.
After analyzing the problem and the potential solutions, I would like to
present the most suitable solutions to solve the problem. I have combined
two potential solutions, which are the teacher assistant should prepare the
lesson before the class and she should attend an English course.
First, the teacher assistant should prepare the lesson before the class.

By having a preparation before the class, she will be more ready to teach
and can teach more smoothly. In the beginning, it will take a lot of time for
her to prepare the lesson, but after a while she will need less time to do it
because she will have better experience in doing this. Second, by
attending an English course the teacher assistant will be able to speak
English better and she will teach more confidently.
I choose to combine these two potential solutions because by
preparing the lesson before the class, it will make the teacher assistant
more ready in teaching English. Furthermore, by attending an English
course it will improve her English language quality; therefore she will be
able to speak English better and can teach more confidently. By having
these two potential solutions, I believe it will improve the quality of her
English language.
