ABSTRACT

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Many people realize that education is important in life. The higher your educational attainment is, the better your chances are of creating opportunities for yourself. Moreover, the better your opportunities are, the better your quality of life is. Therefore, a lot of people want to go to education institutions such as schools or private courses for many reasons including to get a degree and to get access to get a good job.

People also realize that learning English which is a part of education is also crucial because it has become an international language in the globalization era. It can be seen in the classified advertisement in the newspaper, almost all job positions require people to be able to speak and write English well. The reason is that people realize that English is important in the working world and having English competence will make it easier to communicate and join a foreign company. Considering that mastering English as an international language is important to communicate with a lot of people from various parts of the world, a lot of parents expect their children to be able to master English. Therefore, they

(4)

want the children to learn English since their early ages and take them to an English course. People know that one cannot master English in a short time and there is no fast way to master English. Marsh states that learning the foreign languages takes a long time (Par. vii). For that reason, parents know that it will be more useful if their children learn English since their early ages.

Parents who want to introduce English to their children usually take their children to an education center which has a good reputation and competent teacher staff to teach English to their children. Teachers also realize that they are responsible for helping their pupils to be able to learn English. For that reason, they attempt to do their best for their students. Based on my teaching experience at Kids 2 Success, I also find that a teacher has a significant role to help the pupils especially those with problematic attitudes. Yusuf has believed that the characteristics of a good teacher are they can understand about the characteristics and the development of the pupils (1). Accordingly, to be a good teacher they must know the characteristics and the development of their pupils. Kohn also stated that “attitudes of our pupils are important to make our lesson successful” (5). When pupils have positive attitudes toward the lesson, the teacher can manage the class effectively. Meanwhile, when the pupils have negative attitudes toward the lesson, the teacher cannot always manage the class effectively. Thus, teacher must know the pupils’ characteristics and attitudes to build a good relationship with them. They

(5)

also have to know how to handle the pupils and to help their pupils understand the lesson.

Based on my teaching experience at Kids 2 Success I found that some pupils in the class have positive attitudes whereas some of them have bad attitudes. Therefore, in order to create a positive class environment; I have to deal with problematic pupils. The class is out of control if there are some problematic pupils and the teacher cannot handle them. Considering the above explanation, I intend to discuss how to deal with pupils with

attitude problem at Kids 2 Success as the topic of my term paper.

B. Identification of the Problem

Based on my apprenticeship program, I propose to analyze two issues related to problematic pupils in my English class. The problems that will be analyzed are described in these questions:

1. What are the causes and effects of having pupils with attitude problem in the class at Kids 2 Success?

2. What are the possible solutions to deal with pupils with attitude problem?

3. What is the best solution to solve the problem based on relevant context?

C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study

(6)

1. To identify the causes and the effects why the students in my class have bad attitudes based on my observation and my teaching experience.

2. To analyze the possible solutions to deal with pupils with attitude problem.

3. To find out the best solution to handle the problematic attitudes of pupils in my English class.

Benefits of the study:

1. For the institution (Kids2Success): Benefits for Kids 2 Success is that the teacher can get some insights about how to handle a class that has problematic students.

2. For the readers: It will broaden the reader’s knowledge especially for teacher. It will also benefit those who already have children, because the information will help them to deal with attitude problem of their children.

3. For me: This research will improve my knowledge about how to handle a class with problematic students. This knowledge will be valuable for me as a teacher. It will be useful for me when I become a parent someday.

Kids 2 Success’s vision is to become an education center with a new fun way of learning English. Kids 2 Success’s missions are to make our pupils like learning English and to make the learning become a fun activity for our pupils. Right now, Kids 2 Success is getting more popular. It can be proven by the number of students which is increasing every month.

E. Limitations of the Study

The problem that I would like to focus on is the ways to handle problematic pupils in my Runner class at Kids 2 Success. I would like to find out the solutions to deal with the students with problematic attitudes based on the library research, my apprenticeship journal and my observation.

F. Organization of the Term Paper

The term paper consists of four chapters. Chapter I is the Introduction.

Chapter II contains Problem Analysis. In this chapter I analyze the causes and the effects of the problems.

(8)

Chapter IV states the Conclusion, my comments and suggestion. In the final part, I present successively the Bibliography.

(9)

CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSION

After analyzing the potential solutions in the previous chapter, I would like to choose the best solution. Therefore, I decide to combine two solutions. First, I have to stay close with the pupils in order to know them and to be their friend and second, I need to give compliments and encouragements to the pupils to do a good thing or show good attitude. Based on my observation and teaching experience at Kids 2 Success, both of these solutions give positive effects to the pupils and these are suitable for the teachers in Kids 2 Success. These solutions can be implemented in the class or outside the class. For example, during the story-telling time I can ask the pupils about their daily activities, their feelings or their family. After the class I can play with my pupils. Staying close with the pupils is important to me because staying close with them will allow me to know them better. On top of that, when they trust me, I can be their best friend and I can give positive influence to my pupils.

Giving compliments to support the pupils is also important because the pupils will be motivated and happy. Furthermore, giving

(10)

encouragement to pupils will show that the teacher appreciate their effort and they believe that the pupil can be a better person. What is more, if I have good relations with the pupils, the class will have a good learning atmosphere. Although I need to spend my time to build good relations with the pupils, I believe it is worth doing because I love children and I want to help my pupil to be a better person.

Based on my current teaching experience at Kids 2 Success, it is believed that both of these solutions can give positive effects to the pupils at Runner class at Kids 2 Success. Furthermore, implementing these solutions might help the pupils be a person with good attitude and help the teacher to teach the class effectively.
