HIGH SCHOOL: A DESIGN - BASED RESEARCH. First Supervisor: Prof.

A Thesis: English Education Departement, Teacher Training and Education
Faculty, Graduate Program, Sebelas Maret University Surakarta.
This research aims at (1) investigating the needs of English teacher and
students toward character-based English materials in Junior High School, (2)
analyzing the weaknesses of students’ book viewed from character values and (3)
developing character-based English supplementary materials based on 2013
curriculum for Junior High School.
Design-based research was applied. 36 students and English teacher were
participated. Data were existing English course book, result of need analysis,
prototype product and the implementation of prototype. Data collected through
library research, pre-observation, interview, questionnaire and FGD. Procedures
were: (1) preliminary research which consists of need analysis and literature
review, (2) prototyping which consists of drawing prototype blue-print, making
prototype draft and expert validation and (3) assessment which consists of final
prototype draft, try out and final product.

Findings reveals that: (1) character-based English materials was needed in
Junior High School, (2) students’ book used in class target was limited in the
implementation of religious, honesty, hard working, independent, curiosity and
friendship values and (3) final product was character-based English module based
on 2013 curriculum for Junior High School completed with CD for listening
materials. In relation to pedagogical implication, findings support English
materials developers in developing materials based on character building.

Khusnul Vita Indraswari. S891402030. “Mengembangkan Materi Tambahan
Bahasa Inggris Berbasis Karakter untuk Sekolah Menengah Pertama:
Sebuah Penelitian Berbasis Desain”. Pembimbing Pertama: Prof. Dr. Endang
Fauziati, M.Hum. Pembimbing Kedua: Dr. Nur Arifah Drajati, M.Pd. Tesis:
Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Program
Pascasarjana, Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta.
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) menginvestigasi kebutuhan guru Bahasa
Inggris dan siswa terhadap materi Bahasa Inggris berbasis karakter di Sekolah
Menengah Pertama, (2) menganalisis kelemahan buku siswa ditinjau dari nilainilai karakter dan (3) mengembangkan materi tambahan Bahasa Inggris berbasis
karakter berdasarkan kurikulum 2013 untuk Sekolah Menengah Pertama.
Penelitian berbasis desain diterapkan. 36 siswa dan guru Bahasa Inggris
ikut berpatisipasi. Data adalah buku Bahasa Inggris terdahulu, hasil dari analisis
kebutuhan, rancangan produk dan implementasi produk. Data dikumpulkan
melalui kajian pustaka, pra-pengamatan, wawancara, angket dan focus group
discussion (diskusi kelompok). Langkah penelitian meliputi: (1) penelitian
permulaan, terdiri dari analisis kebutuhan dan kajian pustaka, (2) rancangan,
terdiri dari merancang kisi-kisi produk, membuat rancangan produk dan validasi
ahli dan (3) penilaian, terdiri dari rancangan produk akhir, uji coba dan produk
akhir.
Hasil temuan menyatakan: (1) materi Bahasa Inggris berbasis karakter
dibutuhkan di Sekolah Menengah Pertama, (2) buku siswa yang digunakan di
kelas target terbatas dalam penerapan nilai keagamaan, kejujuran, kerja keras,
kemandirian, keingintahuan dan pertemanan dan (3) produk akhir adalah modul
Bahasa Inggris berbasis karakter untuk Sekolah Menengah Pertama dilengkapi
dengan CD untuk materi listening. Sehubungan dengan implikasi pendidikan,
hasil penelitian mendukung para penyusun buku Bahasa Inggris di dalam
mengembangkan materi berdasarkan pengembangan karakter.
