( 5/ 30/ 2009) The st ark profile of t he volcanic m ount ains Agung and Abang dom inat e t he work of t he
children of isolat ed Desa Ban, who have creat ed im ages of "t heir Bali" in black & whit e Chinese ink. I t is a
Bali m ost viewers would at t ribut e t o t he island 100 years ago. I n t hese m ount ainside ham let s, where
villagers eke out a subsist ence living on st eep slopes covered wit h volcanic sand during t he erupt ion of Mt .
Agung in 1963 t hat killed over 10,000 people, lit t le has changed wit h t im e. Hom es are st ill sim ple
st ruct ures and t he only wat er is collect ed from t he roofs of t heir sim ple hom es. East Bali Povert y Proj ect
( EBPP) has brought new hope t o t he regions, wit h appropriat e t echnology t o bring wat er t o t he villages,
and new schools t hat are bringing light back int o t he life of t he young ones.

I nspired by an up and com ing young Yogyakart a art ist , Surat m in Bagus Priyo, who volunt eered his t im e
for 2 days in Sept em ber 2008 t o t rain t he children in t he East Bali Povert y Proj ect schools, t hese children
have t aken t he t echniques t aught by Bagus and used t hem t o share t heir t ake on realit y. The paint ings of
t iny ham let s, t erraced hillsides, and a life far from t he bright light s of m odern Bali, could all have been
paint ed in t he m oonlight .

I n his own words, Bagus was inspired by EBPP's " generosit y in pouring energy, t im e and m oney int o all

kinds of effort s t o raise t he qualit y of life of fellow beings living in povert y." His t rip was a " great
opport unit y t o share life's experiences as a young art ist t eaching m y art st yle of Black and Whit e- Chinese
I nk paint ing wit h young children living high on t he slopes of Mt . Agung, t he revered volcano t hat had
blanket ed t heir hom es in ash; t hese children were accust om ed t o being at t he m ercy of an environm ent
t hat m akes even survival an achievem ent ."

The exhibit ion of 40 Black & Whit e Chinese ink drawings and a lim it ed num ber of color paint ings will be
held at Three Monkeys Cuisine and Art Café on Monkey Forest Road, Ubud from June 14 t hrough t he end
of July 2009. Part of t he proceeds from t he sale of t he paint ings will be used t o support developm ent of
t he children's art wor k t o help t hem develop professionally, wit h t he goal of est ablishing t heir own
professional art cooperat ives. The balance will go int o a fund for t he young art ist s t hem selves, who are all
enrolled in EBPP's senior high school program and dream of becom ing professional art ist s, t o inspire t hem
t o cont inue developing t heir art skills and enable t hem t o purchase t heir own art m at erials.

Alongside t he art works will be a display of vet iver grass hand craft ed product s t hat have been developed
t hrough t raining wit h som e of t he world's t op designers from Thailand, as well as designs inspired by
Linda Garland, President of Ubud- based Environm ent al Bam boo Foundat ion. Vet iver, int roduced in 2000
t o prevent erosion in t he arid volcanic ash landscape, has st abilized all of t he st eep dirt roads and enabled
t he children t o develop lush organic veget able and herb gardens. I t is hoped t hat t he developm ent of
handicraft skills wit h t he root s and t he dried grass will open up furt her avenues for fut ure econom ic

developm ent .
The opport unit y will also be t aken on t he opening night , June 14t h, t o present t he new " Teacher's
Guidebook" t o accom pany t he " The Art of Learning by Doing," a bilingual handbook for t eachers t hat
provides t ools and exercises in lesson form at t hat can be im plem ent ed in class t o enhance bot h language,
art , and personal skills. This book enables t eachers t o priorit ize t he im port ance of healt h, hygiene and
good nut rit ion for good educat ion, incorporat ing int o daily lessons t he im port ance of children learning t o
express t hem selves in bot h art and language, and opening t heir eyes t o ways in which t hey can at t ain
result s hit hert o considered be yo nd t heir reach.
