Institutional Repository | Satya Wacana Christian University: The Technique of Teaching Vocabulary to Elementary Students in Pabelan
Abstract
Teaching English in Pabelan is challenging since Pabelan is a rural area
which has less facilities to support learning process. Meanwhile, in teaching
vocabulary, teachers need to use an Audio Visual aids (AVAs) to help them.
Considering the importance of vocabulary in learning English process, this
research conducted to describe and analyze what techniques were used by
teachers to teach vocabulary in Pabelan elementary school. The participants in
this study were three English teachers from three elementary schools in
Kecamatan Pabelan. The reason why the participants were taken from three
elementary schools was because in rural area elementary school, they only have
one English teacher in each school and even one of the teachers that I observed
teaches English in several schools in the same period. The data were collected
through classroom observation and semi-structured interview which allowed the
participant to share their thought and experience of teaching vocabulary in
Pabelan. The findings revealed that the teachers mostly used clue, hints and realia.
The reason why they used those kinds of techniques was because those techniques
were easier for them to introduce vocabulary and the lack of supporting facilities
to teach vocabulary in rural elementary school.
