ABSTRACT
This research aims to investigate the power exercises in Sara Shepard’s young
adult novel Pretty Little Liars and the reactions of the characters towards the
power. The data were collected from the narrations and dialogues among the
characters, which then be categorized into the six bases of power according to
Raven (2008). The result shows that there are 28 exercises of power in total, with
only five types of power occuring in the novel: legitimate, referent, coercive,
informational, and expert power. The most frequent type is legitimate power,
while reward power is not found in the data. Furthermore, the exercises of
different types of power result in different reactions from the characters, which are
compliance, resistance, admiration and the feeling of competitiveness. The
findings of this research indicate that the exercise of power in this novel is related
to the social roles of the characters.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki penggunaan kekuasaan di dalam novel
“Pretty Little Liars” karya Sara Shepard and reaksi setiap karakter cerita terhadap
kekuasaan tersebut. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari narasi dan dialog antar
karakter, yang kemudian dikategorikan ke dalam enam jenis kekuasaan
berdasarkan teori Raven (2008). Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa secara
keseluruhan terdapat 28 penggunaan kekuasaan dan hanya terdapat 5 jenis
kekuasaan yang muncul di dalam novel ini, yaitu: legitimate, referent, coercive,
informational, dan expert power. Tipe kekuasaan yang paling sering muncul
adalah legitimate power, sementara reward power tidak ditemukan pada data ini.
Selain itu, penggunaan beragam jenis kekuasaan ini juga menimbulkan beragam
reaksi dari para karakter, yaitu pemenuhan, perlawanan, kekaguman dan perasaan
kompetitif. Hasil temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan
kekuasaan di dalam novel ini berkaitan dengan peran sosial karakter yang
bersangkutan.
