Abstract

This study is focused on binary oppositions of Calon Arang and Empu Baradah
characteristics in novel The King, The Witch And The Priest by Pramoedya Ananta
Toer. The theories that applied in this study were Structuralism and character theory.
Calon Arang was as a bad character whereas Empu Baradah was as a good character.
Calon Arang was an evil who had black magic and she often used her black magic to

kill people around her, while Empu Baradah was a man that expert in religion and
science and he readily helped anyone else’s need. The aim of the study was to find
the binary opposition of Calon Arang and Empu Baradah charater. Structuralism was
the properly method that applied in this study because structuralism was the
methodological that focuses text as the important part in analysis or that closely to
textual analysis. Through this approach the writer found several binary oppositions
both of the characters such as: temperament/friendly, arrogant/wise, and loving
mother/unconcerned father. Hence, those binary oppositions produce some meaning
that Calon Arang was the bad character that should be lost by Empu Baradah because
his role was the good character. It means binary opposition emphasized the operation
relationship between both of the characters that good character over bad character.

Key words: Structuralism, character, characteristic, and binary opposition.
