kualitatif, don peneliti memilih tefuik penelitian analisis dahtmen untuk
menganalisisdata Sumber dota yang digunakon berasal dari lima Novel yang
ditulis oleh penguang StephenieMeyer, ontara lain Novel Twilight New Moon,
Eclipse, Breaking llown dan The Hast. Ada lima puluh empat data yang
digurwfon untuk menganalisis beberapajenis tindaknn sebagai pemicu ujaran
jorii. Peneliti yakin balwa novel ini neretleksikm kehifupan maryaratat
Amerika yang sesunggulvryaPeneliti mernggonbarksn dan menganalisissetiq
ujaran dsi tokoh-tokoh dolam novel sesuai dengan teori Brown and l*vinson
(1987). Dart hasil analisis data ditemukon bahwa tindaknn-tindaksnyang dapat
memicu seseorctng dalan ujaran janji adalah:tindakan meminta, tindokan
memberikan nosehat, dan tindakm menst+'skmt. Masing-masing tindokst
memiliki tindakmaindakm pemicu Bentuk-bentuk4jaran yang dapat digmakan
dalam mengekspresikan janji antara lain: bentuk ujaron performattf

This thesis is entitled The Triggcrs 9f Promise Uttennces in English: A
Pragmatie Study. The objective of the ,btudyis to describethe types of act which
triggers the promise utterances,and to describe the forms of utterancesare do the
people use in expressing promises.i This study uses qualitative descriptive
methods;the researcherchoosesthe documentanalysistechniquein analyzingthe
data. There arE five data source which used for the analysis from the novels by
StephenieMeyer, suchas: Twilight, New Moon Eclipse, Breaking Dawn and The
I/o.rt There are fifty four data that used for analyzing the formulation. The
researcher believes that the novel reflect the real lives of Americans. The
researcherdescribesand analyzesutteranceswhich are uttered by ttre characters
from the novels basedon the theories of Brown and Levinson (1987). From the
analysis the researcherfinds the acts triggering the promise utterances.There are
suggestions,
