  ABSTRACT

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CSW (Catch, Speak, and Write)

  By: NURLIANA FITRIYANTI 1001050011

The aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of CSW (catch, speak, and write) game for teaching descriptive writing at SMP Negeri 1 Kutasari in academic year 2013-2014.

This research was a quasi-experiment. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kutasari. There were eight classes which consist of 32-35 students, so the total numbers of the students were 275. In this research, there were two classes that were taken as the sample. Class VII G as the control class and class VII H as the experiment class. The treatment was done

  th th

from 14 - 30 April 2014 at SMP Negeri 1 Kutasari. The writer used test (pre- test and post-test) to collect the data, and t-test was used to analyze the data.

In this research, the data were analyzed by using computation to know the effectiveness of CSW (catch, speak, and write) game. The result was that t-test higher than t-table. The result showed that the pre- test’s mean score of experiment class was 47. 65, while the pre- test’s mean of control class was 47. 32. The post- test’s mean score of experiment class was 74. 75, while the post-test’s mean score of control class was 64. 68. The deviation score of experiment class was 27.1, while the deviation score of the control class was 17. 36. The t-test result was 3. 98 and t- table for degree of freedom (df) 62 at the level significance α= 0. 05 is 1. 670, so the result showed that t-test was higher than t-table (3. 98> 1. 670). It means that CSW (catch, speak, and write) game is effective for teaching descriptive writing at the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kutasari,Purbalingga in academic year 2013-2014.
