Some people claim that children do enough work in school already. They
also
argue that children have hobbies that they want to d.o after school, such
as $ports or
music.-A further point they make is that a lot of homework is pointless and
doesn,t help
the child learn at all.
However, thery ar9 also strong arguments against this point of view. parents
and
teachers argue that it is important to find out whether chitdrin can work
on their own
withgut the support from the teacher. They say that the evening is a good time for
children to sit down and think about what they have leamed in schoil
Furthermore they claim that the school day is too short to get anything done that
needs doing and it makes sense to send home tasks like independent readinf
or fi,ther
writing tasks that don't need teacher,s support.
On balance, I think that some homework is a good idea but that it should only
ygn at the weekend when children have more time.

HOUSE HUSBANDS' HEART RISK
Most people assume thx life in the rat race is bad for your health. But reversing
the traditional gender roles, being a house husband is a stressful business, according
the Iatest research by American scientists, By giving up their jobs in order to become
house husbands, men increase their risk of heart attack or coronary disease by as much as
82Yo, according to research based on l0 year study of 2.500 people in Boston, USA.
According to Dr Elaine Eaker, the key to the problem is that some men became
stressed about performing a role not traditionally assign to them by society. Men who
stay at home tend not to have the same levels of support from friends and family as
women do the same.
Jack o'sullivan, of the Father's Direct soup, was quoted as saying: ,.society
expects the main career should be a woman and society is stnrctured arounO that. Day
care is called mother and toddlev groups and some men feel awkward about belonging to
those groups.
Professor Gary Cooper, a psychologist at the University of Manchester, said
many men tend to underestimate the task of caring for a family. He said 'Most men think
being a house husband involves putting on a bit of washing, taking the kids to school and
then putting their feet up with a cup of coffee.
They are q^zy. Most men are not used to performing a variety of activities
simultaneously - the kind of multi-tasking which is second nature to most women.'
It is estirnated that men have taken over the main homemaker's role in one in
seven homes, as increasing numbers of women become the main breadwinner. The study
also found that women in high-powered jobs were more likely to develop heart diseasi
than those in more iuni

100,000 Chinese are studying in Australia and by 2005, a million Chinese tourists a year

The bilateral relationship is central to our national interest and holds the key to our

never forget May 3, 1990, the day Tien-Tien came into our lives. Ahong, the
wifs of my youngest brother Ajiang, gave birth after a very diffrcult labour of five hours.
We already had a name for the baby before she was born. She would be called Tien-Tien
which meant'sweetness'.
As we waited at the hospital, our joy quickly turned to grief when the attending
physician announced that he could detect no signs of life in Tien-Tien. There wzrs no
breathing, no heartbeat, so he finally declared the baby dead.
Ajiang decided to 1ay the body next to the Taizi River. To outsiders, this might be
strange; to us, a Chinese family with almost no money or resources, the prospect of
encouraging the baby's spirit slip away to a better world in a beautiful setting made a
great deal of sense. We planned to refurn later to bury Tien-Tien's remains and pay
honour to her.
Ajiang wrapped his child in a red floral quilt and set off for the river. He gently laid
his baby in a patch of grass along the bank of the river.
A week later, while I was walking home from work, I overheard several women
talking about one of her friends. They said their friend heard a baby crying and the sound
came from a patch of grass along the river bank. They further explained that the baby
had been placed in a local orphanage.
Something inside me said it must have been Tien-Tien. Without waiting any
longer, I ran to the orphanage. In the room I saw Tien-Tien in a crib covered in dirt but
verymuch alive.

48.

What is the best title far the text?
The dead baby.
The baby in a crib.
The poor crying baby.
The baby by the river
The newborn baby.

49.

Why did they suddenly become unhappy?
The baby was heartless.
The baby was already dead.
The baby was declared alive.
The baby had no sign of life.
The baby could not be detected.
