First of all, I would like to say thanks to the Almighty God for His Grace

that keeps on showering me through the making of this thesis. I also want to
give my sincere thanks for the kindest and most understanding supervisor, Mrs.
Anna Suryaningsih for her guidance. I cannot be anymore grateful for your
patience, understanding, and efforts to keep me on track, also all your helps
even when you were already far away. I wish you luck for your study in UGM.
I am also very lucky to have a great student advisor like Mrs. Rindang
Widiningrum who never gets tired of taking care of me and the rest of the
phasing out colleagues, who all happens to be a ‘little’ naughty. I am also
thankful for my thesis examiners Mrs. Deta Maria and Ms. Ervin Suryaningsih
for helping me correcting the thesis in a very short time, even though I was
pretty late submitting the revisions. Millions of thanks, dear lecturers!
Last but not least, I want to say thanks for all my families who keep
supporting me no matter how long I took to finish my study. Sorry for the wait!
I faced a lot of hardships when writing the thesis but I am very lucky to have
loyal friends who keeps on accompanying me no matter what: The Hobbits,
Dimas, Osa & Komeng, SoDa GKI Salatiga, Putri, and everyone whom I cannot

ABSTRACT

This study discusses about the personality development of the main character of the
novel “The Giver” named Jonas using the needs theory of Abraham Maslow and from
psychological point of view. The discussion will be done by classifying Jonas’ needs using
The Needs-Fulfillment Model which contains two broad divisions: deficiency needs,
including physiological or basic needs, safety needs, and belongingness and love needs; and
also growth needs, including esteem needs, divided into self-esteem and esteem for others,
and lastly, self-actualization. The fulfillment of these needs must be in order from the lowest
to the highest one. In fulfilling these needs, Jonas will have to face conflicts that are required
to be solved to move to the higher level of needs. Jonas will encounter a personality
development when he has reached the highest level of need, and self-actualize.
