THE GRAMMATICAL INTERFERENCES IN STUDENTS‟ FIRST DRAFT ENGLISH (L2)

1

NARRATIVE ESSAYS

Abstract

Each language has their own rules for their grammar to communicate that make them
different from other languages. So, when language learners started to learn a new language as
their second language, it is sure that interference will occur in their second language learning.
Based on the students‟ first draft English narrative essay, this study found common
grammatical interferences of students‟ first language (L1) in their second language (L2)
writing. This study was aimed to investigate what are the grammatical interferences that are
mostly found in students‟ first draft English (L2) narrative essay. The participants of the
study were nineteen students who were drawn from one class of Narrative and Descriptive
Writing courses in Satya Wacana Christian University. Qualitative analysis was conducted to

explore the finding in detail. The data were analyzed based on Berthold‟s framework (1997)
and Cowan‟s framework (2008) that had been decided before. The study found that sentence
level was the grammatical interferences that were mostly found in the student‟s narrative
essay because the students still used Indonesian dative movement pattern in English sentence.
Next to it, singular/plural and preposition was the second and the third biggest areas
influenced by the grammatical interferences because in students Indonesia language the
pattern of plural/singular and preposition are different from English pattern. This study‟s
findings will contribute to a better suggestion in teaching writing narrative text in teaching
and learning process.
Keywords: grammatical interferences, first draft, narrative essay.
