KATA PENGANTAR
Dengan mengucapkan syukur kepada Yang Maha Kuasa, kami sajikan modul yang berjudul ‘ASKING FOR AND GIVING PERMISSION’ kepada para rekan guru dan siswa siswi SMK. Modul ini berfungsi sebagai bahan pemelajaran tambahan dalam menguasai sub-kompetensi bernomor ‘A12’ dalam kurikulum bagian 2.

BAB I PENDAHULUAN
A. DESKRIPSI
Modul berjudul ‘ASKING FOR AND GIVING PERMISSION’ ini merupakan rangkaian pelajaran mata diklat Bahasa Inggris untuk SMK. Pada Kurikulum bagian II, disebutkan bahwa sub-kompetensi yang bernomor ‘A12’ ini diperuntukkan bagi siswa-siswi pada tingkat Novice, yakni mereka yang skor standardized TOEIC-nya berada pada rentang 10 – 300. Sub-kompetensi ini saling melengkapi dengan sub kompetensi terkait lainnya. Setelah mempelajari modul ini, siswa dapat meminta dan memberi izin sesuai dengan kondisi yang dibutuhkan. Sub-kompetensi yang diperoleh bisa membantu siswa dalam dunia kerja nanti, misalnya untuk mengungkapkan permintaan dan pemberian izin kepada seseorang untuk melakukan sesuatu.
B. PRASYARAT
Modul ini adalah modul ketiga pemelajaran Bahasa Inggris, yang mempunyai prasyarat awal telah memiliki kemampuan pada sub kompetensi A1 – A11 sebelum memulai pemelajaran.

Sebelum masuk ke pemelajaran, siswa perlu membawa kamus Bahasa Indonesia – Bahasa Inggris yang memadai. Siswa diharapkan bersikap proaktif menemukan ungkapan/frase/kata-kata kunci yang lazim digunakan dalam meminta dan memberikan izin kepada seseorang. Guru berperan sebagai fasilitator yang membantu revisi, dan jika diperlukan menambah apa yang sudah dikoleksi siswa. Guru juga berfungsi sebagai model untuk kegiatan keterampilan berbicara, penyedia sarana, atau pendamping yang bisa dijadikan model untuk keterampilan tersebut. Selain itu, guru adalah assessor untuk menilai pencapaian hasil belajar.
D. TUJUAN AKHIR
Setelah mempelajari modul ini, siswa diharapkan bisa menggunakan ungkapan untuk meminta dan memberikan izin kepada seseorang. Siswa dianggap menguasai bahan pemelajaraan ini jika telah mampu menunjukkan kriteria unjuk kerja tersebut di atas, dalam bentuk tes lisan (performance test) dan tes tertulis (written test).
E. KOMPETENSI
Sub Kompetensi ‘ASKING FOR AND GIVING PERMISSION’ merupakan suatu titik pada rangkaian Kompetensi kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam Bahasa Inggris pada tingkat Novice, yaitu siswa pada placement test memiliki skor standardized TOEIC 10 – 300. Ruang Lingkup sub-kompetensi ini meliputi ungkapan permintaan dan

memberikan izin, ‘modal auxiliaries’,’constructions’, dan ‘conditional sentence type 1’.

5.1 Conditional sentence type 1
Kalimat perumpamaan biasanya menggunakan Klausa If. Kalimat pada klausa if menggunakan pola Simple Present Tense dan kalimat pada kalimat yang berisikan
akibatnya (result clause)
menggunakan pola Future Tense. Tipe 1 dari kalimat perumpamaan ini menunjukkan bahwa suatu kejadian mungkin terjadi di masa akan dating.
Contoh :
1. If I don’t eat breakfast, I always get hungry at school.
2. Water freezes (will freeze) if the temperature goes below 0oC.
3. If the weather is nice tomorrow, we will go on picnic.
4. Andi’s parents will give him permission to visit his grandparents if he passes the test.
5. If they don’t get here soon, we will leave without them.
6. If you need more help, please ask the janitor.
Kalimat no. 1 menunjukkan kegiatan tersebut adalah suatu kebiasaan sehingga pada result clause menggunakan Simple Present.
Kalimat no. 2 dapat menggunakan Simple Present atau Future Tense karena kejadiannya dapat diterka.
Sedangkan pada kalimat no. 3, 4, dan no. 5 menggunakan Future tense karena kegiatannya
berhubungan dengan keadaan di masa akan datang.
Untuk kalimat yang berisikan perintah, pada result clause-nya langsung menggunakan infinitive.

Pembentukkan kalimat permintaan yang menggunakan m0dal
auxiliaries sangatlah mudah. Pada kalimat tanya (kalimat 1, 2, dan 3), modal auxiliaries diletakkan di awal kalimat dan diikuti oleh subjek.
Sedangkan pada kalimat afirmatif atau kalimat negatif, maka modal auxiliaries akan berada setelah subjek (kalimat 4 dan 5).

Pada beberapa ‘verbs of perception’ diikuti oleh ‘simple form’ atau ‘-ing form’. Keduanya mempunyai arti yang sama, hanya saja bentuk ‘-ing’ mempunyai arti yang sama dengan ‘while’
‘Let’ selalu diikuti oleh bentuk dasar dari ‘verb’ – bukan ‘an inifinitive’.
Causative ‘have’ mempunyai pengertian bahwa seseorang menyebabkan orang lain melakukan sesuatu.
