ANALYSIS OF TASK FORMATS FOR READING COMPREHENSION IN
SMA TEXTBOOKS
Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the task formats used in reading sections of senior high
school books. The samples of this study were two SMA textbooks grade X. The books titled
Look Ahead and Developing English Competencies. The data were analyzed based on the
definition of task suggested by Nunan (2004). This study identified the task formats and the
frequency of each task format used in reading section of the textbooks. There were six units in
Developing English Competencies, seven units in Look Ahead. Each unit has listening, speaking,
writing, and reading sections. These textbooks provided different types of exercises in each unit.
The reading sections of the textbooks were analyzed and the occurrences of reading task formats
were calculated. This study also analyzed input, procedure, and goal of each task format. The
results show that short answer tasks were the most frequent task format used in both books.
Whereas information transfer was least frequently used. This study also shows that not all task
formats that are discussed in the literature are used in reading text in SMA textbooks.
Key words: task formats, reading comprehension, input, procedure, goal.
