ABSTRACT
The aim of this research is to know about the effect on Crossword Puzzle
used as evaluation tool in the mean subject of Environmental Management toward
the VII grade students learning outcome and academic English mastery at SMP
Negeri 1 Medan academic year 2011/ 2012 by using two sample groups.
Experiment group thought with Crossword Puzzle assignment and Control group
thought with regular assignment.

The result of this research showed that student learning outcome and
academic English mastery that assigned with Crossword Puzzle is improved
compare to the student who’s assigned with regular model. This proved by X =
77.67 and SD= 7.17 on learning outcome; on writing score has X= 76.08 and
SD=6.25; vocabulary use score X = 85.58 and SD= 4.62; correct spelling X =
79.58 and SD= 4.56 for Experiment Group otherwise for Control group has X =
71.00 and SD= 6.80 on learning outcome; on writing score has X= 65.17 and
SD=8.12; vocabulary use score X = 69.54 and SD= 11.10; correct spelling 67.54
and SD = 11.09. The Crossword Puzzle is increase the student learning outcome
as much as 9.96 %, writing ability 16.137 %, vocabulary uses 22.57%, and
spelling ability 16.94%. The hypothetical test also proved that Learning Outcome
0.032 < 0.05; Writing Ability 0.00 < 0.05; Vocabulary Use 0.00 < 0.05; and
Spelling Ability 0.00 < 0.05. Thus, H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means that
there is effect of Crossword Puzzle to Environmental Management topic toward
the VII grade student learning outcome and academic English mastery at SMP
Negeri 1 Medan academic year 2011/ 2012.

ABSTRAK
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tentang efek pada
Teka-teki silang yang digunakan sebagai alat evaluasi dalam mata pelajaran
Manajemen Lingkungan terhadap hasil belajar dan penguasaan bahasa Inggris
akademis siswa kelas VII di SMP Negeri 1 Medan tahun akademik 2011/2012
dengan menggunakan dua sampel kelompok. Kelompok eksperimen diberikan
tugas dengan Teka-teki silang dan kelompok Kontrol diberikan tugas dengan
tugas regular.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hasil belajar siswa dan penguasaan
bahasa Inggris akademik yang ditugaskan dengan Teka-teki silang meningkat
dibandingkan dengan siswa yang ditugaskan dengan tugas regular. Ini dibuktikan
dengan X = 77,67 dan SD = 7,17 pada belajar hasil; kemampuan menulis X =
76,08 dan SD = 6,25; penggunaan kosakata X = 85,58 dan SD = 4,62; ejaan yang
benar X = 79,58 dan SD = 4,56 untuk Grup Eksperimen, dan untuk kelompok
Kontrol didapat X = 71,00 dan SD = 6,80 pada hasil belajar; pada kemampuan
menulis X = 65,17 dan SD = 8,12; penggunaan kosakata X = 69,54 dan SD =

11,10; ejaan yang benar 67,54 dan SD = 11,09. Teka-teki silang dapat
meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa sebanyak 9,96%, 16,137% kemampuan menulis,
penggunaan kosakata 22,57%, dan kemampuan mengeja 16,94%. Uji hipotesis
juga membuktikan bahwa Hasil Belajar 0,032
