Abstract
Educators in all level are often challenged by their teaching responsibilities as they must teach students with
various levels of motivation, prior knowledge, skills, and capabilities to absorb the course materials. The flipped

classroom concept offers a potential solution for educators to accommodate these diverse students. A flipped
classroom is a classroom where the materials are learned by the students individually at their own pace prior to
the classroom meetings so that the face-to-face classroom meetings can be used for more engaging learning
activities. The flipped classroom concept has given some positive promises for today’s educators. With the help
of technology and the availability of reusable learning objects in the internet, educators can give this method a
try. This paper discusses the flipped classroom concept, pros and cons on implementing the flipped classroom,
some tips to prepare the first flipped classroom, available resources that are ready-to-use, and several potential
active learning instructional strategies to be used in the face-to-face classroom meetings.
Key words: flipped classroom, reusable learning objects, online resources, active learning, instructional
strategies.

while at the same time we deliver the appropriate
amount of knowledge to our students.
The answer to this question will not be simple,
but it is not impossible. The “flipped classroom”
concept, which this paper will discuss, is a concept
on how to change your classroom experience so that
students can learn sufficiently, at their own pace

prior to the face-to-face class meetings using the aid
of technology, and conduct a range of active
learning activities inside the classroom. Although
this concept has a similarity with the concept of
blended learning, it is not exactly the same.
This paper is organized to first introduce the
flipped classroom concept, the pros and cons on
implementing this concept in your classroom, tips to
prepare a your first flipped classroom, available
online resources for your materials, and selected
potential instructional strategies in implementing the
flipped classroom concept.

Background

As educators, our daily tasks involve preparing
materials and guiding our students to learn the
materials in our course. We continuously consider
new ways to deliver our course materials to students,
either in a traditional classroom or in a virtual elearning environment. Ultimately, whatever we

choose to do, the best educators will similarly think
about one greatest goal, it is how we can help our
students to be better learners, to help them survive
when our courses end, in the wild real world.
Unfortunately, we are not always lucky, having
students with the same level of motivation, priorknowledge, skills, and capabilities to absorb what
we teach. Having this condition, we are often
challenged by students who struggle in our course,
and students who get bored easily with our course
because they are not challenged sufficiently. Our
biggest challenge then is how can we offer enough
differentiation for these different types of students
