CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
People will be able to express their thought and feeling each other by
using language. Language itself cannot be separated from social community,
because language is a bridge to build relationship with the community
members.
In Indonesian education, English is taught as a foreign language. Many
people think that foreign language is difficult to learn, because many of them
learn English when they are adult. Therefore, teaching English, as foreign
language should be modified to invite the learners’ interest to learn and then
practice English in their daily conversations.
Teaching English in Senior High School is different from teaching
English in elementary school. The students in Senior High School are
categorized as adult learners. They can adapt a situation with their needs, more
responsible, and dynamic. During this period, a person thinks in the stage of
formal operations, which means a person can use adult form of logic and
symbolic representation, such as solving problems (Carlson, 1987:192).
Therefore, it is suitable to give Senior High School students this kind of
speaking activity.
In teaching English for adult learners, the teacher should be able to

give interesting and various materials. Usually, learners will get bored if they

1

2

got the same topics and methods. That is the problem that must be solved to
reach a life teaching learning speaking class beside the low confident from the
students to speak English.
Actually, English teachers have different methods to transfer their
knowledge. It means that every school has different style in teaching speaking.
It will influence the characteristics of the teaching English learning process in
the classroom.
Learning a language is learning how to be able to speak in that
language. The 2004 curriculum called Competency Based Curriculum places
speaking skill as the most important skill that should be mastered by learners.
Unfortunately, in most Indonesian Senior High Schools, teachers rely their
teaching activities merely on textbook. For instance, if in the textbook they
find a discussion for speaking activities, they merely use the discussion. The
teachers are required to make alternative materials and activities in order to

improve the students speaking skill or to make the teaching-speaking run
easier and interesting.
The writer tries to apply problem solving as one alternative activity in
teaching speaking to the second year students of Senior High School due to
make students feel free to express their idea by solving problems.

B. Limitation of the Study
Due to the limited time and sources, the writer only focused on the
teaching speaking by using problem solving activities. In this research the

3

writer wants to identify how far the student’s motivation can be raised by the
teaching speaking by using problem solving activities for the second year
students of Senior High School in the second semester.

C. Problem of the Study
The writer formulates the problems as follows:
1. How is the implementation of teaching speaking by using problem
solving activities?

2. What is the result of teaching speaking by using problem solving
activities?
3. What are the strength and weakness of teaching speaking by using
problem solving activities?

D. Objectives of the Study
Based on the problem statements, the writer formulates some objective
of study as follows:
1. To describe the procedures of teaching speaking by using problem
solving activities to raise the students’ motivation.
2. To describe the result of teaching speaking by using problem
solving activities for the second years of Senior High School.
3. To describe the strength and weakness of teaching speaking by
using problem solving activities.
