IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING COMPETENCE THROUGH SCRIPT PLAY
TECHNIQUE
(A Classroom Action Research at Grade VII B students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1
Purwokerto in Academic Year 2013/2014)

The aim of the research was to improve students‟ speaking competence in English teaching and learning process through script play. The research was carried out at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto in Academic Year 2013/2014. The research used Classroom Action Research. The researcher took grade VII B students which 16 female and 18 male as the subject of the research. This action research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, questionnaire, interview and test. Based on the result of collecting the data, there were some conclusions that can be drawn. Script play was able to improve students‟ speaking competence in English class. The students passed the success indicator
≥ 80%. From 34 students there were 32 students (94.11%) who passed the success indicator in the cycle II.
Students‟ speaking competence also improved. The score improvement in post-test 1 was 23.5% toward pre-test. The score improvement in post-test 2 was 20.76% toward post-test 1. The observation result showed the total average of students‟ activities in Cycle 1 was 24.69%, and the total average of students‟ activities in Cycle 2 was 82.52 %. Thus, the improvement of students‟ activities was 57.83%. The questionnaire result showed 82.4
% of the students answered “yes”. Overall, the research showed that the teaching speaking through script play could improve students‟ speaking competence in English teaching learning process.
