I N T RODU CT I ON
Course obje ctive sThis gener al education cour se is designed facilitate under standing of the basic concepts and vocabular y, theor ies, empir ical knowledge, and pr ocess r elevant to the study of speaking. Lectur es, discussion, or al pr esentations, and in-class and out-class activities will be used to aid the development of knowledge and skills r elating to the study of inter mediate speaking. The aim is to mer ge theor y and pr actice thr oughout the classr oom exper ience. To this end, we will maintain a stimulating inter active, open, and fr iendly classr oom envir onment that foster s self and other insight, cultur al thinking, intellectual gr owth, and communicative competence.
Ge ne ral policie s and e xpe ctations
1. Students must sign the daily attendance r oster . Class attendance is expected and is cr itical to your success in this cour se. If you plan to miss class often, whether excused or not, this is not the class for you. Attendance will be counted in the par ticipation por tion of your gr ade.
2. Active par ticipation is a must. Par ticipation points can be ear ned by attending class r egular ly, by actively and r espectfully par ticip ating in class discussion and activities, by completing assignments for class, and by attentively listening to and giving appr opr iate feedback to all classr oom speaker s. Par ticipation points will be lost for : absences and talking while someone else in the r oom is speaking; this includes the instr uctor , student speaker s, and the students par ticipating in class discussion. Dur ing student pr esentations, I fully expect ever yone to attentively listen to the speaker
3. Class time will be center ed on the lear ning and pr actice of text mater ial. Students will have ample chances to speak in a gr aded manner . Discussion and conver sation will be emphasized.
