Championship
mitigates 65.817 Kg of CO2

Barcelona – October 23, 2014
At a presentation at the start of the FIA WRC Rally Spain today it was
reported that in 2013 and 2014, 38.070 liters of GEM Fuel has been used
as the fuel of choice in the Fiesta R2 young driver categories of the
World Rally Championship and a total of 65.817 kg of CO2 was
mitigated!
Supported by its partners, Abengoa, Methanex, Natgasoline, e-Pure and the
Methanol Institute, and in close cooperation with M-Sport and the FIA GUTTS
received approval for the supply of GEM Fuel at the start of the 2013 season.
Since then close to 40.000 liters of GEM Fuel enabled 24 young drivers to
compete over 16.000 kilometers, 4.000 stage kilometers on 234 stages in 10
events and 2 champions were crowned!
The total costs to adapt the Ford Fiesta R2 to run on GEM Fuel was only € 25 per
car, making the combination of the M-Sport Ford Fiesta R2 + GEM Fuel the
cheapest CO2 reduction project in motorsports so far!

GEM Fuel, an advanced renewable race fuel, is a ternary blend fuel containing
three components: gasoline, bio-ethanol and CO 2 derived, renewable methanol.
Blending these components creates a high performing race fuel with very ‘green’
credentials; high engine efficiency and power output, an increased biomass limit
and high CO2 reduction from (ISCC Certified) sustainable feedstock.
Jarmo Mahonen, FIA Rally Director, said at the start of the initiative in 2013: “The
FIA has a strategy to develop solutions to reduce the environmental footprint of
mobility in general and motor sport in particular. Our Championship can be a real
world testing facility. This is why we have decided to allow an innovative,
sustainable renewable fuel to be tested in WRC. This choice illustrates our
ambitions to drive for more sustainable motor sport.”
Malcolm Wilson OBE, M-Sport managing director, said: “M-Sport has always been
keen to support new and innovative technologies that will help our business
progress whilst improving the sustainability of the sport. After carrying out a full
evaluation of the fuel in 2012, we were keen to see it in action and implemented
it for the 2013 FIA Junior World Rally Championship and the 2014 Drive DMACK
Fiesta Trophy.”

Edward Goossens, founding partner of the GUTTS initiative, is proud to have
accomplished a turnaround in motorsports: "At GUTTS we firmly believe that we

can enjoy motorsports to the full, without detriment to the environment. Our
mission is to show that motorsport and sustainability can go hand in hand and be
very affordable at the same time."
Future outlook is positive as more and more countries and competitors are
adapting to this relevant trend. With the due homologation of more small sized
high compression engines in the WRC, the high octane, cool burning GEM Fuel is
a viable, valuable and affordable way to increase the sustainable profile of the
WRC and rallying in years to come.
