ABSTRAK

Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There karya Lewis

ABSTRACT

Lewis Caroll’s Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There tells about a girl named Alice, who travels in the mirror world in which she meets and interacts with a number of fictious characters such as Red Queen, Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee the twins, and others. Her journey is filled with weird incidents as well as hillarious, coupled with the presence of unique characters that as if having certain intentions. This story encourages the writer to know whether there is a connection between those characters and Alice, a girl who is growing adult. Therefore, this study tries to reveal the symbols in the novel to find the roles of either the characters or other things in the story for Alice’s development.

The objectives of this study are to reveal the meanings of every symbol in the novel and to explain how those symbols help Alice in her individuation process.

In conducting this study, the approach that is being used is archetypal approach considering that this approach was once used by Carl Jung to analize personality. Archetypal approach is an approach that is intended to reveal the meanings, ideas and thoughts beyond someone’s natures and behavior.

The results of the analysis reveal that there are some symbols in the novel, which are Red Queen as a symbol of nobility, Humpty Dumpty as a symbol of mischief, Tweedledum and Tweedledee as a symbol of manhood and Crown as a symbol of completeness. These symbols possess certain archetype especially for Alice, where Red Queen describes her Persona, Humpty Dumpty describes her Shadow, Tweedledum and Tweedledee describe her Animus and Crown describes the Self. All of them are proven to help Alice in her individuation process as she can identify her good side through Red Queen, ackonwledge her bad side through Humpty Dumpty, find her masculine side through Tweedledum and Tweedledee, as well as finally realize and accept her complete self through Crown.
