CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
As social creatures, people need to interact with each oth er. One of the
ways to interact with other people is communication. People usually
communicate using language. By using language, people can share their ideas,
feelings, and others. So, it is obvious that language is very important in
communication.
English, one of the foreign languages, plays as in important role in the
world because it is most common language used in communication. English is
becoming more important all over the world especially in anticipating and
facing global era. That is why, more and more people try to master English,
both written and spoken.
No language is more broadly learned and applied as a foreign
language than English. In Indonesia, English is regarded as the first foreign
language which is taught in formal and informal educatio n, starting from
elementary school up to university. Some kindergartens, especially in big
cities, start introducing English to their students. Even, some parents spend
their money to send their children to English courses where children can learn
English earlier.
English is intended to give a great help to the students who want to
continue their study to higher education or institution. It has also a great

function in helping them to comprehend the literatures that are written in
English. Obviously, Englis h is very important, so the students who want to be
more successful in their study are demanded to learn English.
There are four skills that shou ld be mastered by the students in
studying English namely: listening, speaking, writing, and r eading. Among
those skills, speaking is considered as the important skill, which the students
should master well.
Speaking is the process of building and sharing meaning through the
use of verbal and non-verbal symbols. Speaking is a crucial part of second
language teaching and learning. However, the goal of teaching speaking
should improve the students’ communicative skills because students can
express themselves and learn how to use a language.
Nowadays, many teachers agree that students should learn to speak
the foreign language by interacting to others. For this case, students should
master several speaking components’, such as pronunciation, grammar,
vocabulary and fluency (Syakur, 1987: 3). In brief, English teacher should be
creative in developing their teaching lear ning process to create good
atmosphere, improve the students speaking skill, give attention to the speaking
components and make the English lesson more exiting.

For this reason, the English teacher of SMP Negeri 1 Banyudono
should apply appropriate method and technique of teaching speaking. The
method used by the teacher is Communicative Approach. In Communicative
Approach, language is primarily a tool of communication. Thus, learning a

language means learning to perform communicative speech act with it
(Brickerton, 1996: 1).
Furthermore, the students also have a good result in speaking
activities; the students need a lot of practice in speaking with their friends.
They should prepare themselves especially before joining the class related to
the material. Based on the above background, the researcher is interested in
conducting a research entitled “TEACHING SPEAKING BY USING
