A Description Of The Murder In Morris’s Novel “The Mermaid In The Basement”
ABSTRACT
This paper deals with the murder found in Gilbert Morris’s novel “The Mermaid
In The Basement”. The objective of study is to describe the murder in the novel.
In the order to get the needed result, the writer uses library research especialy
qualitative method, the data are taken from the story of the novel. The data, then,
are described based on the murder. From the description, it is found that the
murder of Katherine Fairfield occurs because she will publish her relationship
with her secret lover. Because of that, her secret lover can not let her live. Beside
it, her rejection for Clive makes Clive being accused in her murder case. Then,
Clive’s sister, Serafina tries hard to find the evidence to free Clive from the jail
by doing private investigation. It starts by investigating Kate’s room, Expensive
cigart, Kate’s dairy, Kate’s personal maid, the man with stell hook and Kate’s
secret lover until she finds that the killer is Superindependent Winter, the
policeman himself.

Paper ini berkaitan dengan pembunuhan yang ada di dalam novel karya Gilbert
Morris yang berjudul “The Mermaid In The Basement”. Tujuan penelitihan
adalah untuk mendeskripsikan pembunuhan dalam novel. Untuk memperoleh
hasil yang dibutuhan, penulis menggunakan penelitihan perpustakaan khususnya
metode kualitatif, data diambil dari cerita sebuah novel. Data selanjutnya
dideskripsikan berdasarkan pembunuhan. Dari deskripsi tersebut didapat bahwa
pembunuhan Katherine Fairfield terjadi karena ia akan mempublikasikan
hubungan gelapnya dengan kekasih rahasianya. Oleh karena itu, kekasih
rahasianya tidak membiarkannya tetap hidup. Di samping itu, penolakannya
terhadap Clive membuat Clive tertuduh dalam pembunuhan tersebut. Sehingga
kakak Clive, serafina, berusaha keras menemukan bukti untuk membebaskan
Clive dari penjara dengan melakukan investigasi pribadi. Investigasi ini dimulai
dengan menyelidiki kamar Kate, rokok mahal, catatan harian Kate, pembantu
Kate, lelaki dengan cantelan baja di tangan kanannya, dan kekasih rahasia Kate
hingga ia menemukan bahwa pembunuh Kate adalah Superindependent Winter,
seorang polisi itu sendiri.
