ABSTRACT

Kertas karya saya ini berjudul A BRIEF STUDY OF INTRINSIC

ELEMENTS IN HABIBURRAHMAN EL SHIRAZY’S NOVEL KETIKA

CINTA BERTASBIH. Membahas tentang intrinsik element yang terdapat di

dalam novel ‘’Ketika Cinta Bertasbih’’ metode yang saya gunakan dalam kertas

karya ini adalah metode study kepustakaan yaitu dengan membaca buku-buku

yang berhubungan dengan judul kertas karya saya ini. Unsur-unsur intrinsik yang

di bahas adalah seperti theme,plot,character,setting, dan point of view. Karakter

yang terdapat di dalam novel ini. Alur cerita yaitu alur maju-mundur yang dimulai

dengan perkenalan situasi masalah dan penyelesaiannya. Novel ini bercerita

tentang seorang anak muda bernama Azzam yang rela berjuang dan berkorban

karena hidup ini tidak mudah. Penokohan yaitu bagaimana tokoh-tokoh yang

terlibat diceritakan dalam novel tersebut. Tempat yang di gunakan yaitu di Kairo

dan Indonesia. Beberapa tempat di Kairo seperti sungai Nil, Piramida, dan kota

Alexandria. Dan masih banyak lagi tempat-tempat lainnya. Sedangkan di

Indonesia yaitu Solo dan Gemolong. Penulis membatasi pengkajian novel dalam

lima unsur instrinsik untuk mempermudah para pembaca dalam memahami kertas

karya ini dan bisa mengenal lebih jauh tentang Novel Ketika Cinta Bertasbih itu

sendiri dan penulis juga berharap kertas karya ini dapat menambah wawasan para

pembacanya tentang kajian novel secara instrinsik, khususnya Novel Ketika Cinta

Bertasbih.

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Background Of Study

The writer is interested in choosing Habiburrahman El Shirazy Novel “Ketika Cinta Bertasbih” as the topic of this paper. We know that novel are fiction but this novel is the real story and ever happened.

This story is not only made in novel, but in a film too. Many people read this novel and watch the film “Ketika Cinta Bertasbih”. It is one bestseller novel and has been popular in this novel we can fell what the character does.

The writer has analyzed that this novel also provides possitive messages to the readers about how important we keep belive in a friendship.

1.2 The Objective Of Study

The writer has his own purposes when he decide to write this paper. He wants to know more detail about Novel Ketika Cinta Bertasbih by Habiburrahman El Shirazy. He also want to introduce how to analyze the novel and tha other student who have not read the it yet.

1.3 The Scope Of Study

He concentarte this study in five parts: the theme, plot, characters, setting, and point of view and then he limits his study in analyzing the elements of novel intrinsically.

In writing this paper, he applies the library research and then he does same steps. First of all, he reads the theory of literature especially theory of analyzing fiction from several books. He reads ones again the novel and makes a summary of it. He analyzes the novel based on the theory that he got finallly he reads the novel in order to fulfill his curioustly about the story.

2. CHARACTERIZATION AS ONE OF THE INSTRINSIC ELEMENT OF LITERATURE

The first motive of reading literary is for pleasure or entartainment. Through literature we can easily acknowledge the vital part played in human affairs by writers, and who read the literary works will find knowledge of human affairs boadened and depened whether in the individual, the social, the racial or international sphere.

The instrinsic elements of a novel are the elements that build the literary works itself. It can be found when someone reads a novel. Novel has certain major elements that connect each other in developing a story its unity. The unity of a novel will create a concrete novel.

Novel has five istrinsic elements to develop the story. Namely, Theme, Plot, Setting, Points of View and Character. Without them, literature does not exist.

2.1 Theme

Theme (Rene dan Austin, 1982 :93) can be viewed as the basic of a story or centaral basic idea of a novel. This central basic idea, which has been stated previously is used for expanding the story. In other word, the story will be “loyal” to follow the central

basic idea. So, several events, conflicts, and the election of the instrinsic elements such as character, setting and plot are carried to reflect the basic idea of a novel.

According to Stanton (in Nurhiyantoro,1995:70) “Tema adalah makna sebuah cerita yang secara khusus menerangkan sebahagian besar unsurnya dengan cara yang sederhana. Kurang lebih dapat bersinonim dengan ide utama ( central idea ) dan tujuan utama ( central purpose ). (which means theme is a meaning of the story that especially explaines a big part of its elements in the simple way. It more or less can be called as the central idea and central purpose of a story)

2.2 Plot

According to Stanton (in Nurgiyantoro,1995:113 ) “Plot adalah cerita yang berisi urutan kejadian namun tiap kejadian itu hanya dihubungkan secara sebab akibat, peristiwa yang satu disebabkan atau menyebabkan terjadinya peristiwa yang lain. (which means plot is a story that contents of chronology events, however, every events only occur as causality, one events was caused or cause the other events occur)

A story requires several times order. It is called Plot. It will concern about past time, the present time, and the future time, or the combination of the two different times. It can be arranged chronologycally in flashback moments depending on the author’s will. In other words, plot contains how the story runs connected with every events which come afterwards in a series.

Conflict and climax are the most important things in the plot’s structure, both of them are the main elements of plot. Climax probably happens if there is a conflict. A

conflict will become climax or not, finished or not, in many ways will be influenced by the attitude. And the author’s main purposes in building the conflicts approriate with the demand and the coherence of the story.

According to Foster (in Nurgiyantoro,1995:113) “Plot adalah peristiwa-peristiwa cerita yang mempunyai tekanan pada adanya hubungan kausalitas” (which means plot is event that have pressure and causality)

To understand plot is not easy. The reades should have sensitivity of though, feeling, serious, and critic. Plot is classified into three major parts. They are plot baed on the criterion of time order, plot based on the criterion of number, and plot based on the criterion of contents.

2.3 Character

Character (Rene dan Austin,1982:15) is the essential element in the story. It portrays what kind of person is and what of attitudes he or she usually has when he or she in certain situation. A story can never be without character and theya are powerful to make the story seem alive and real. Character is the author’s way describing their character in a literary work, or it is the authors’ mean of differentiating one character to another. Characters are closely related to the plot because character means action, while action forms the plot of literary work.

According to Abrams (in Nurgiyantoro,1995:165) “tokoh cerita orang-orang yang ditampilkan dalam suatu karya naratif, atau drama yang oleh pembacara ditafsirkan memilki kualitas moral dan kecenderungan tertentu seperti yang diekspresikan dalam ucapan dan apa yang dilakukan dalam tindakan (which means characters are the people

presented in dramatic of narrative work, who are interpreted by the reader as being endowed with the moral and dispotional qualities that the expressed in what they say the dialogue and what they do in the action.)

The discussion about the character with every characterization in many cases is more attractive to people than the matter of plotting. But it does not mean that we can ignore the element of plot, because the explanation of character and characterization functioning in a story as bearer of massages, mandate, morality or something intended to be delivered to readers depend on the plotting. In some fiction written by the author, whether it is imaginary or the real one.

As indicated in several of the story analysis, a character of the chief developments in modern fiction has been in the increasing emphasis upon characterization. Many stories set in order categories in this collection. With slight shifts in tone and attitude. The reasons for the emergence of character are complex, but not the least is the discovery and development of psychoanalysts have reaveled more about the inner reserves of individual, authors have naturally enough found new areas to research. (Leo Hamalian and Federick Karl,1967:237)

The author usually use characters in their literary works to identify thepeople, the situation, or to unfold the ideas in a novel by using dialogues and actions. People absolutely know that character is the most important element in a novel. Because

character can easily help the authors to convey the themes or the main idea as well as view to the readers.

The people in novel are characters. We asses them on the basis of what the author tells us about them and on the bassis of what they do and say. This important, we must avoid loosing cojecture about a character and establish everything from the evidence of the text. Another point to remember is that the character are part of boader pattern, they are members of a society will be reflected in the presentation of every character.

The authors may present their characters in two general ways, they are:

a. Directly

The most of authors find it necessary to tell their readers directly something about the characters that they are creating. An author might tell the readers that a character has some characteristic like gray hair, is fifty years old, is married to somebody, has some children, looks after her or his mother and paints for a hobby, etc. The authors need not tell their readers directly about their characters. The most of authors use direct telling to convey something about their characters.

b. Indirectly

Some of authors want to tell their readers something indirectly. They show that a character can emerge from the way he or she speaks, reacts, or thinks. So the readers will understand about the character of at the story.

Many of the stories in the section, indeed in the entire collection, are ‘opened up’ through the author’s use of character. If you fail to understand that, you miss the important of the story. Character is one of the insteristing for the very personal reason that we want to see how other people live, how they make decisions and react to responsibility, how they make decisions and react to responsibility, how they pursue their goals. We measure ourselves by them. Think of cahracters in stories and novels as real people, and then let your imagination go. ( Leo Hamalian and Frederick Karl, 1967:238 )

2.3.1 Main Character and Periphal Character

Reading a novel, the readers usually will face several characters that are appeared in the story, but each character has different role. Based on the role and level of impotance, there are essential character being appeared continuously, so that it is felt dominating most of the story, it is called main character (central character). On the other hand, there are character who appear once or some times in the story, and maybe relativly in short portion, it is called peripheral characters. Main character is a character that emphasized in a novel.

2.3.2 Protagonist and Antagonist

Based on character’s appereance, the character can be differentiated into protagonist and antagonist.

Protagonist is character who is admired by readers, popularly he is called as hero because he always does ideal role and followa the rules and values in society. On the other hand, Antagonist is opposite character of pratogonist, directly or indirectly, either

physically or psychollogically(Alternben and Lewis,1983:71,75) This character usually causes conflict for protagonist, although the other things, such as disasters, accident, environment and society, social rules, moral values, authority can cause confilct.

2.3.3 Static Character and Developmental Character

Static character is character that essentially does not experience changes or development of characterization because of events that had happened (Altenbern and Lewis). This character less involves and is not being influenced by environmental changes or that happened because of human relationship. Static character like coral in the sea, that is always strong although hit by wave everyday.

Meanwhile, development character that experience changes and development and changes of events and plot that are being told. Character’s attitude develops, so that he will experience the development and changes from the beginning, middle until the end of story.

2.3.4. Typical Character and Neutral Character

According to (Albenbernd and Lewis,1983:77) typical character is character that has little appearance in condition of his individually, but he is more appeared in quality of his work or his nationality, or something that is more representatives. Typical character is description, reflection, or direction about person who is involved in an institution that is being the real world.

On the other hand, Neutral character is the character that has existance for the story itself. This character is really an imaginary character that lives and exist in fictional world. He appears only for the story itself, or even he is the owner of the story, the

subject of the story. Therefore, the readers get difficulty to interpret him as representative character because there is less reflection from the fact in real world.

2.4 Setting

Setting (Renne dan Austin,1982:131) is concerned with the places where the story takes place. When reading a novel, you can find certain locations such as the name of the town, village street, hotel, room, etc in the places where the events occur. The author describes the places obviously so that I could be able to imagine and similar with them while reading the novel. Setting is divided inti three major parts. They are setting of place, time, and society.

According to Abrams ( in Nurgiyantoro, 1995 : 216 ) “Setting disebut juga sebagai landas tumpu, menyaran pada pengertian tempat, hubungan waktu dan lingkungan sosial tempat terjadinya peristiwa-peristawa yang diceritakan’ which means setting is also called as central base, according to meaning of place, time, and social sphere where the events take place)

2.4.1 Setting of Time

Setting of time is related to the matter of “when” the events happened in a fiction. The matter of “when” is usually connected with factual time, time that has connection with historical events. The readers to understand and enjoy the story based on the time that they know.

2.4.2 Setting of Society

Social society directs to matters that are related to the behaviour of social life in certain place and certain time of a novel. Social setting has connection with the system of

social life that contains many problems in complex scope. It can be habits, custom, tradition, religion, ideology, and the way of thingking.

2.5 Points of View

Another aspect of fiction, often treated separately in some critical texts, is point of view. Stated simply, it is a term for who tells the story and how the story gets told. The nature and personality of narrator will determine in part what is seen and how it is seen.

Points of view is the autor’s vision, that is, the angle from which the events are seen oe narrated, from the outside, from inside, from above or bellow. While the style as the sound of the autor’s voice ( that is, as the mode of utterence rather than the tone ). And the specific relationship between voice and vision is this: whatever the particular voice may be-tenor or bass, light or dark, gentle or though the vision should suit the voice.

There are four basic “angles of vision” or point of view, they are:

1 The omniscient point of view

In which the author himself tells the story in the third person. The narrator knows everything about everyone in the story and can bring into plays as mush of that knowledge as he chooses.

The writer must whether the “I” is to be major or minor character, pratogonist or observer, or someone merely repeating a narrative he has heard at second hand.

3 Observer’s point of view

In a modification of omnniscient points of view, there is the narrative related from the vision of a single character used by the author as a central observer or central intelligence through whom anything cleared.

4 The objective points of views

Though it too is third-person narrative like the omniscient points of view, the author using this technique refrains from making asides, commenting on the action, or addresing the reader. The author becomes a seeing eye that reports but does not interpret.

2.5.1 First Person Points of View

In this points of view, the author or the narrator is involved in the story. He is the “I” or the character who is telling his self-consciousness, telling events and actions that are known, seen, experienced, and felt by the readers. The readers accept what the “I tell, so they can only see and feel definitely like what is seen and felt by the character, the “I”.

The “I” of course has a name, but the name is seldom called in the other characacter. In this point of view, the narrator only know about the other character and doesn’t not about other character that are involved the story

First person point of view is differentiated in two groups based on the role and status of the “I” in the story. The “I” maybe protagonist or main character, or may become peripheral character on as a witness.

2.5.1.1 The “I” as Main Character

In this technique, the “I” tells the events and behavior which is experienced by himself, either physically or physicologically. The “I” becomes focus, center of consciousness, and center of the story. Everything outside of the “I” such as events, actions or other persons, is only told if they are important or related to the “I”. The experinces of life that are told by the character “I” will have close relation with the reader’s experience.

2.5.1.2 The “I” as Peripheral Character

Technique of the “I” in this kind is present to provide the story of the readers. The “I” as peripheral as witness of events that are happened to other characters.

Third person point of view uses narrator as the narrator as the person who is outside of the story and appears the character by calling their names, or their substitutes: he, she, and they. The names of characters, especially main characters is called continuosly or the substitute. So that, the readers are easier to know who characters are.

Third person points of view called as he “he”, can be differentiated ito two groups based on the level of independence and the dependences author in his story. In one side, the author can be independent to tell everything he knows about the character “he”, is called the omniscient author or third person omniscient. And the other side, the author is dependent to tell the “he”, so he can only be observed.

2.5.2.1 “He” as Omniscient Person

In this point of view, the story is told from the side of “he”, but the author can tell anything about “he”. The author knows everything about characters, events, actions, and motivation. He is free to move and tell everything.

2.5.2.2 “He” as Observer

In this point of view, the author describes the things that are seen, heard, experienced, thought, and felt by the character, but definitely in one character. Maybe there are many characters as the “he”, but they are not given change to show themselves like the first character. Therefore, there is only one character that is selected in this technique, this character is focus, reflection, or center on conciousness.

A novel maybe uses more than one point of view. The author can change the point of view from one technique to another in a story that he made. All of them depend on the author’s creativity, how he uses the techniques to reach the effectiveness of telling story in order to give impression to the readers.

The uses of this point of view in a novel maybe use the third person with technique “he” as omniscient person and “he” as observer, or first person with technique “I” as main character and “I” as peripheral character, or maybe a mixture od first person and third person all at once.

Ketika Cinta Bertasbih is about life including how to make priority before doing some action, and love. There are two theme found in this novel

1.Life

The main character is Kairul Azzam, he is 28 years old. He is an indonesian collage student in Al Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. He takes 9 years to finih his study. Usually it needs 5 years. This happened because his father died and Azzam becomes patriarch otomatically. He is doing business in creating tempe and meatball in Cairo to defray himself and his family in Indonesia

Khairul azzam has three litlle sisters and his mother, Azzam is the one people who has to help them. He does business in creating tempe and metball in Cairo. Because he is more focus at his business ,then his performance goes down . A fiew time he can’t pass the exam so that he has been nine years in Cairo. but he has been graduated for the bachelor degree.

“ Saya ini bukan selebritis kok dik, saya ini cuma penjual tempe dan bakso di Cairo. Sungguh. Kebetulan diantara yang sering pesan bakso saya adalah ayahnya Eliana dan Eliana itu sendiri. Ayahnya Eliana iu kan dubes Indonesia di Mesir, jadi saya kenal baik dengan ayahnya Eliana jelas Azzam panjang lebar. Tadi itu Eliana tidak serius dia cuma bacanda (Rahman,148) ... ... Sejak jam tiga pagi Lia dan ibunya telah bangun dan menyiapkan segalanya menyambut kepulangan Azzam. Hati Azzam gemetar

wangi ibunya. Ibu yang sangat di cintainya, telah sembilan tahun berpisah lamanya. Matanya basah. Di ujung dua matanya air matanya meleleh (Rahman, 124)

2. Love

One day the ambassador’s daughter invites Azzam to take a part in Indonesian traditional food and culture day in University of Alexandria. The Ambassador’s daughter is Eliana. This moment made Eliana falling in love with Azzam. But Azzam prefer choosing Anna Althafunnisa although Azzam never meets Anna Althafunnisa before and then Anna Althafunnisa was pruposed marriage by Furqan. Furqan is Azzam’s best friend. The other side, Furqan has big problem. He has HIV AIDS in his body. He gets the virus because a mysterious Italian girl injects that virus when Furqan sleeps in Meridian Hotel, in Cairo.

“Tiba-tiba Furqan menangis sendiri, ia teringat hari yang paling celaka dalam hidupnya yaitu ia terbangun dari tidurnya dan mendapati dirinya dalam keadaan yang sangat memalukan dan juga diteror dengan foto-foto dirinya bersama mis Italiana. Bencana itulah yang membuat Furqan positif mengidap penyakit HIV AIDS. Ia tau miss italiana yang menghancurkan hidupnya. Wanita itu memasukkan virus HIV AIDS melalui suntikan ketubuhnya. Dan terahir ia membaca hasil laboratorium yang menyatakan bahwa ia mengidap HIV AIDS. Dan ia berjanji kepada kolonel Fuad untuk tidak menyebarkan virus yang di deritanya

The Novel Ketika Cinta Bertasbih uses the progressive plot in general, because the author tells the story chronologically. The story is began when the main character studying in Cairowhile and doing his business, then he is introduced to Indonesian ambassador's daughter, Eliana. After that he comes back business man an Indonesia. Azzam does business in Indonesia and becomes a famous business man and a rich man, then the author tells about he has accident, until he is married.

“Eliana itu kan anak Dubes Indonesia di Mesir jadi saya kenal baik Eliana, tadi itu kan Eliana tidak serius. Dia main-main dan dia mau mengerjain saya, wah punya kenalan artis ini jadi repot jelas Azzam panjang lebar, ia tau kalo adiknya dan dua gadis temen adiknya itu menduga yang bukan bukan pada dirinya(Rahman,124)

Then it tells about the conflicts happened to Azzam's friend's uncle who wants to kill his nephew. The climax is when an accident happened to Azzam and his mother. They fall from their motorcycle because of that bus. Azzam has been hospitalized while his mother died.

“begitu sampai di sini tadi saya diberitahu oleh petugas UGD bahwa ibu mu meninggal.bisa jadi meninggal di tempat atau di jalan.yang jelas sampai di UGD nyawa beliau sudah tidak ada. Saya langsung inisiatif minta para pemuda untuk menggali kubur.hujan di sana sudah reda. (Rahman,355)

Besides that ‘Ketika Cinta Bertasbih’ uses the sub- plot, because the author tells not only tells the story of one character but also other character. He tells about Khairul Azzam's family, Eliana’s family,and Azzam’s friend

3.3 The Analysis of the Character

We usually will face several character that are appeared in story. But each character has different role. Based on ‘Novel Ketika Cinta Bertasbih’ the writer will analyze the main character and peripheral character.

3.3.1 Main Character

There are four main character found in Novel Ketika Bertasbih. They are Khairul Azzam, Eliana, Anna Althafunnisa, Furqon.

We usually will face several characters that are appeared in story. But each character has different role in ‘Ketika Cinta Bertasbih’. In this part writer will analyze the main characters and peripheral characters

1. Azzam. His fullname is Khairul Azzam, a 28th young man, an indonesian collage

student in Alzhar University, Cairo, Egypt. He has finished his study until nine years. It must for five years because after his father died. Khairul Azzam become a patriarch otomaticly. He do business in creating tempe and meatball in Cairo. For defraying himself in Cairo and his family in Indonesia because the one who has to help his family in Indonesia is Azzam.

2. Eliana is ambassador daughter. She is smart, high intelligence and she is friendly. She also indonesian. Eliana lived in Cairo eith her parent’s. They are rich. Sometime Eliana comes to Indonesia to finish her work. It is as an actress, because Eliana is a character in Indonesia. Eliana loves Khairul Azzam because she thinks Khairul Azzam is a hard worker, but Eliana not yet introduce Khairul Azzam to her parents.

“Buk, kalo misal kak Azzam benar dekat sama Eliana terus nanti mau menikahi Eliana, ibu setuju tidak?

Kalo Eliana itu muslimah, mau mengaji, mau menutup aurat dengan baik dan taat pada suami ya...Ibu setuju saja. Siapa toh yang ga mau punya menantu cantik dan kaya seperti Eliana?’’(Rahman, 137)

3. Anna Althafunnisa. Anna Althafunnisa is Indonesian collage student in Alzhar

University, Cairo, Egypt. She is smart and high intelligence. She is a leader religious school daughter. Her parents are a religious peoples so that she is a religious girl too. She is a right woman to be wife. Anna Althafunnisa loves Azzam and Azzam also loves her too. But Anna has been proposed by Furqan. She is called as main character because she has important role in this story. She loves Khairul Azzam, but she doesn’t know about Khairul Azzam identity. She receives Furqan to be her husband whereas Khairu Azzam knows that Anna Althafunnisa was propose by his friend. And then Khairul Azzam can not love Anna. the Khairul Azzam true love is Anna Althafunnisa.

4. Furqan is Khairul Azzam’s best friend. Furqan is an Indonesian colage student in Al

Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. He is a richman. Furqan lives in apartement in Cairo, but his parent lives in an Indonesia. Furqan is a smart people, high intelligence, of course he is friendly. Not like Azzam, Furqan has finished S1, but he continues his study to S2 and he has finished for that. Furqan is handsome so many girls love him like Eliana. And he loves Eliana too but he thinks Anna is more match than Eliana to be his wife. Finally Furqan and Anna Althafunnisa get married.

3.3.2 Peripheral Characters

There are many peripheral characters who appear in Ketika Cinta Bertasbih story. However, the writer will choose some of them according to the importance of their role that influnce the main character and the story itself of the novel. They are Nafis, Husna, Lutfi, and Nur.

1. The first peripheral character is Nafis. Nafis is Azzam’s mother. She is an old

womab, she lived in Solo, Central Java with her three children. She has four children. They are Kairul Azzam, Husna, Lia and Siti.

“Ya Allah mudahkanlah semua urusan anakku Azzam, Aku titipkan keselamatan nya pada-Mu ya Allah. Engkau Dzat yang maha pengasih dan penyayang ya Allah berkahilah umur dan langkahnya ya Allah amin” ia mengatupkan matanya dan menangis. Ibu mana yang tidak

menangis bila teringat anaknya yang sudah sembilan tahun tidak di lihatnya (rahman, 41)

2. The second peripheral character is Husna. Husna is Azzam’s youger sister. She is

smart. She has finished writing four short stories in Solo. Husna is famous in Solo. Because of Husna, Anna meets Azzam. She began to be a writer when her brother study in Al-azhar, Cairo, Egypt.

“Salah satu cerpen dalam buku ini berjudul “Ketika Naya Jatuh Cinta” pertanyaan saya, orang kok begitu sering berbicara tentang cinta. Pertanyaan saya apa sih sebenarnya cinta menurut mbak Husna”.dan pertanyaan saya kalau boleh jujur pernahkah mbak jatuh cinta? Dan maaf kalau pertanyaan saya terlalu vulgar, bolehkah kami tau mbak jatuh cinta sama siapa? (Rahman, 68)

3. The third is Kiai Lutfi. Kiai Lutfi ia Anna’s father. He is a religious man. He is a

leader of a religios school in Solo. He has one child, Anna Althafunnisa. Kiai Lutfi lives in Solo near with the religious school that he leads. He lives with his wife. His wife is Nur.

“Dan benar, selesai shalat subuh Kiai Lutfi dan Bu Nur memberitahukan mimpi itu kepada Anna. Nyai Nur berkata “aku yakin kau akan bahagia nduk”.

“Amin sahut Anna dengan hati berbuga-bunga. Ia semakin mantap menghadapi detik-detik bersejarah yang tinggal beberapa jam saja akan dilaluinya”. (Rahman, 196)

4. Finally peripheral character is Nur. Nur is Anna’s mother, same with

kiai lutfi, , Nur is a religion people. She lived with her husband. Her

husband is Lutfi.

‘Nduk, Abahmu itu bisa saja kalau becanda. Oh ya nduk umi kebelakang dulu ya. Umi lupa mengambil jemuran, Sri belum pulang’ kata ibu nyai Nur setengah berbisik. ‘’Biar saya saja yang mengambilnya mi’’ lirih Anna. Tidak usah biar umi aja, kau teruskan saja mengemasi barang- Barang mu (Rahman, 382)

3.4 The Analysis of Setting

In this paper, the write will analyze the setting into three parts. They are Setting of place, setting of time and setting of society.

3.4.1 Setting of Place

The author of Ketika Cinta Bertasbih chooses Cairo, Egypt as the place. The main places are Nile River, Pyramid, Spinxs, and the city of Alexandria. After that mediterranian sea and Qait Bay Tower and only some wonderful egyptian landscape. And then Solo, Central Java Indonesia and then Gemolong near from Solo.

“Iya, aku ingin melihat-lihat kota Solo dan setting yang kan digunakan untuk syuting. Sekalian aku mau bersilaturrahmi menemui Budi di Gemolong”

3.4.2 Setting of Time

The author doesn’t tell the exact time when the story began. There is no exact date, neither month, non year. In this novel the author tells that events happened when the main character studying in Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. But the mention of time is still found that is how long Azzam is studying in Cairo. For the an part

“Ibunya juga menangis tersedu sedan. Tangis kerinduan yang memuncak dan tertahan bertahn-tahun lamanya. Azzam sesunggukan dalam pelukan ibunya. Lia, Husna dan Eliana bahkan Pak Marzuki menitikkam air mata.

At the time, the people who live in a social society are rich family, poor family, hard worker who have planning for their live. Of course they care one and help each other.

3.5 The Analysis of the Point of View

In Ketika Cinta Bertasbih, the author uses the thrid person point of view as his technique. To tell abut the story, he uses third person “he’ as omniscient person, because the actor acts as the person who is outside of the story and appears the character by calling their names of their substitudes: mereka(they), dia(she), or dia( he). To make clear see the following

1. Mereka (They)

“Mereka lalu naik mobil dan bergerak ke dukuh Sraten, Kartasura. Azzam bertemu kembali dengan Zumrah, teman waktu kecil dulu. Zumarah yang dulu sering main petak umapt dengannya. Zumrah yang dulu sering ngaji ke mesjid dan sering dijodohkan dengannya. Zumrah yang pernah bilang ke ibu-ibu warung Buk War bahwa ia mau jadi manten dengan kak Azzan saja. Ah masa kecil yang indah itu telah berlalu (Ketika Cinta Bertasbih, page 217)

2. Dia (She)

“Dia perempuan berjilbab maju ke panggung, berjalan dengan anggun dan berdiri dengan anggun di panggung. Setelah salam, perempuan itu membuka kalimatnya. (Ketika Cinta Bertasbih, page 128)

“Dia menangis bahagia sekaligus sedih. Bahagia karena ia telah resmi menjadi suami Anna Althafunnisa dan bahagia karena ia sudah membahagiakan ayah dan ibunya. Sedih karena ia telah membohongi semua dan ia telah menghianati dirinya sendiri (Ketika Cinta Bertasbih, page 200).

4.CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

4.1 Conclusions

After studying Habiburrahman El Shirazy’s Novel Ketika Cinta Bertasbih, the writer would like to conclude the analysis of the novel.

1. Theme Ketika Cinta Bertasbih is about love and Islam. It is love’s novel that can educate and motivate us, as the reader of it. This novel really can touch own heart. It is not only about love but also this novel also motivateds us to be hard worker. The autor has called us to look back at how beautiful it is to live in the guidence of Al-Qur’an and then this novel has become a light in the heart of teenagers to hold the principles of the Islam in their life.

After analyzing Ketika Cinta Bertasbih, I would hope that the reader can understand about the story. And get more knowledge. I also expect that the readers will interested in reading and discussing Habiburrahman El Shirazy’s novel. Finally I hope that someday there is another student who will do for the study complete on this novel because Ketika Cinta Bertasbih story is very intersting.

he starts his junior high school in Mts Futuhiyyah 1 Mranggen while studying yellow kitab in school of Koranic Al-Anwar, Mranggen, Demak under K.H.Abdul Bashir Hamzah. In 1992, he went to culture’s city Surakarta for studying in high school special programme (MAPK) Surakarta and graduated in 1995. After that he continue his study to Usluhuddin Faculty, Hadist direction Al-Azhar University, Kairo and finish in 1999. In 2001, he was graduated and got his post graduate Diploma (Pg.D) S2 in the Institute for Islamic Studies in Kairo founded by Imam Al-Baiquri.

Activity while in Kairo

While studying in Kairo, Mesir, Kang Abik has Kajian group MISYKATI (Majelis Intensif Yuris Prudens and Kajian Pengetahuan Islam) in Kairo (1996-1997). He has been choosen by Indonesia Ambassador to follow “The Second Moslem Campaign International Islamic” held by WAMY (The World Assembly of Moslem Youth) while ten days in Ismailia city, Mesir (July 1996). In the camping, he has chanced to give oration an titled Tahaqiqul Amni Was Salam Fil’Alam Bil Islam. The oration is choosen

This young man of letter has been belived for sitting in Dewan Asaatidz Pesantren Virtual Nahdatul Ulama that centre in Kairo. And he has a chance to make intiative Forum of Lingkar Pena (FLP) and Sastra Indonesia community (CSI) in Kairo.

Upon arrival in Landing in the middle of ctober 2002, he is asked for joining Mentasbih Arabic Indonesia popular dictionary arranged by KMNU Mesir and established by Diva Pustaka Jakarta (June 2003). He is also asked to be an arrangement of Ensiklopedia Intelektualism contributor Pesantren Potret personage and his thingking (divided by 3, established by Diva Pustaka Jakarta, 2003)

Between 2003-2004, he made his dedication in science in MAN 1 Yogyakarta. From 2004 to 2006, he is a lecturer in Arabic Institute and Moslem Abu Bakar Ash Shiddiq UMS Surakarta. Nowadays he makes dedication himself in religious proselytizing world and education by his works and Karya Pesantren and he is a Indonesia Basmala Businessnan he does business with his brothers (Ahmad Minif El-Shirazy, Ahmad Mujib El-El-Shirazy, Ali El-Shirazy) and his friend.

Achievement

Kang Abik, this novelist usually called by his brothers, while he was in

must finished his study untill 9 years, because after his father dies. Azzam becomes a patriach otomaticly. An of expect to defray himself in Cairo, he also take care of his family in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia.

Abdullah Khairul Azzam, an indonesian student that cames from outlaying place, continues his study in Egypt. Azzam is a hard worker. He has a few sisters, so with his all hearts and soul he has to sacrifice himself by becoming the meatballs seller and create tempe (fermented soybean cake). Azzam learn in Al- Azhar University, because he gets a scholarship from the religion ministry. He is a prototype of indonesian that is smart, clever, and humble but he was born from a poor family. His intelligence has been proved when he was in first years at Al-Azhar, he gets the jayyid jidda (special), and then he gets a scholarship from majlis A’la. But on his second years, his father who that lives in indonesian passed away because of an accident. After his father’s passed away, his mother has been poor in her health. Besides that his three little sisters can help her mother because they are still young. The one who can not help his mother in Indonesia is Azzam. Because he has the oldest son. Azzam realize it. Then he moves his concentration from studying to work.

In Cairo he works while studies. His work is doing bussiness, then this performance goes down. A few times he can not pass him exam. Besides he has been nine years at the Egypt but has been ungraduated for the bachelor degree, even he can graduate with jayyid tittle (not dissapoiting). But in the other region at Indonesia, his family including all of his succesful because of his motivation and finding. All of his sisters can be succeeded.

Azzam selling tempe for Indonesian people in there and makes Azzam become a popular guy in Ambassador family of Indonesia in there. One day the Ambassador’s daughter, Eliana invites him to be a part of Indonesia taditional food an culture day in University of Alexandria. The moment made two of them fall in love, but it changes when Eliana intends to give a french kiss to Azzam, because he has helped her in making Indonesian traditional food Yogyakarta found for her father, and her father loves it. For Azzam, french kiss is disaster, because in Islam, it is wrong and sin when a man and woman getting kiss before they get married. Azzam is a religios guy. Living with Al-qur’an as his suidance life (all the moslem in the world.absolutely).

From Eliana driver’s, he gets an info about ar ight women to be his wife, he living with her uncle in Cairo, Egypt. She is also a student in Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. Her name is Anna Althafunnisa. But the situation is unside with him. Anna Althafunnisa was purposed to marriage by his best friend, Furqon. In other side, Furqon has a big problem because he has HIV AIDS. He knows about disease while Anna says “I do” to be his wife. It’s so complicated for him, he really falls in love but the other side he doesn’t want to spread the dying virus to others but he doesn’t want to Anna getting married with other guy,too.

Furqon is a good guy, he is a religious man, he has HIV with accidentally, Mysterious girl from Italy has injected the virus when he is sleeping in his room. Egypt police departement give the exprassion extortion crime in behind the story, that expressed with black latter when Italian girls requires $ 200.000 from Furqon.
